About 100 people were arrested in Chicago and 13 police officers were injured during a night of looting and vandalism — hours after cops shot a young man who had fired at them, according to reports.

The mayhem began about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, when cops responded to reports of a man with a gun in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side and located a person who fit the description near Moran Park, the Chicago Tribune reported.

While running away from police, the suspect turned around and fired at them. The officers returned fire, wounding the gunman, who was transported to University of Chicago Hospital in unknown condition, according to the newspaper.

Police Superintendent David Brown said during a press briefing Monday that the looting was sparked as a result of misinformation that cops had shot and wounded a child, WGN reported.

The 20-year-old man who was shot is expected to survive, said Brown, who added that the suspect had several previous arrests including on charges of burglary, child endangerment and domestic battery, according to the station.

No cops were injured during the incident and a gun was recovered at the scene.

Brown said that after the shooting, a crowd began gathering on the South Side and tempers flared in response to the incident. Police deployed 400 officers to the scene when they became aware of social media posts encouraging looting, he added.

Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot emphasized that the looting was not a part of an organized protest.

“This was not an organized protest,” Brown said. “This was an incident of pure criminality.”

Alderman Brian Hopkins told WGN he saw people driving up in vehicles, smashing windows of stores on Michigan Avenue, grabbing merchandise and driving away.

Police and witnesses later said a crowd of about 30 people faced off against cops near 56th and Aberdeen streets.

The looters and vandals rushed through the city’s Magnificent Mile and other parts of downtown, where they were seen carrying bags full of stolen goods, the Tribune reported.

They repeatedly tried to smash the windows of the Omega watch store at Delaware Place and Michigan Avenue.

“The watch store,” one cop said. “They’re gonna get it eventually.”

Some people were seen running out of a damaged PNC Bank at Huron and State streets, while nearby stores also were cleaned out by looters.

One fleeing woman carrying shopping bags fell on the sidewalk as an officer pursued her, and another woman appeared to have been pepper-sprayed.

“We do have an officer that was maced by someone in the crowd. We do have an officer that sustained a shoulder injury from the incident with the crowd,” Deputy Police Chief Delonda Tally said, Fox 32 reported.

“One of our vehicles, the windows were shattered by a brick,” Tally added.

This police shooting was justified......people will vandalize & loot for absolutely any reason, & soon there won't be any reason needed, they will go out & just do it.

I'm sure it was a peaceful looting, just an extension of "the summer of love"

Plus somebody around here is telling us "crime is declining during the pandemic", which of course is the polar opposite of what the world is reporting, butt I digress

Neighbors in Englewood called the cops on a 20 year old black man who was threatening neighbors with a gun.

Officers respond to Englewood.

20 year old black man fires upon officers.

20 year old black man was injured when officers returned fire.

Fake news circulates via social media that Chicago police shot an unarmed child.

Riots organize to destroy the city, organized via social media and stolen U-HAULs to form a caravan to downtown and the nicer part of town.

Stores looted and destroyed.

Liberals say this is just people trying to get justice because they are miserable pieces of shit that want to see America destoyed.

Did I miss anything?

They’re coming to the white areas? That will grab some attention

I'm not so sure. The white liberal yuppies in this city love Pottery Barn, but they can order online if Pottery Barn closes up shop. They love Target, so don't like to see it looted, but Amazon is just as good. They can have sympathy for these criminals because it still doesn't impact them until they start burning down their fancy high rises and condos.

It's already happening. The Governors and mayors are destroying the fragile fabric of the city with the corona lockdowns. This unrest is all a spinoff of the lockdowns. Commercial and residential vacancies will all be directly attributed to the lockdowns. The tax base will disappear. Bankruptcies will explode. Banks will be stressed. The cities will turn to shit.

Frightens the hell out of me.

There is no way prophylactic shutdowns aren't gonna be many times worse than this damned virus. Willful destruction by our leaders.

I don't think the unrest is a spinoff of the lockdowns really, I think it is a spinoff of criminals/rioters/protesters being emboldened by anti-police rhetoric since late May.

Chicago to restrict downtown access after looting, police clashes

Chicago officials will restrict access to the city’s downtown beginning Monday night after looting and clashes with police that saw 13 cops injured and 100 people arrested.

Police Superintendent David Brown said access to the heart of the Windy City will be limited between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., while a heavy police presence will be seen in the downtown area, with cops working 12-hour shifts “until further notice,” WMAQ-TV reported.

The moves are part of “a multi-layered plan” announced Monday by Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot in the wake of Sunday’s violence.

“This was not an organized protest,” Brown said at a press briefing. “Rather, this was an incident of pure criminality. This was an act of violence against our police officers and against our city.”

“Criminals took to the streets with confidence that there would be no consequences for their actions,” he said, “and I for one refuse to allow these cowardly acts to hold our city hostage.”

Brown said 400 cops were dispatched to the area Sunday following social media calls for widespread looting downtown, where a large crowd had gathered on Michigan Avenue. In one encounter, police shot and wounded a 20-year-old alleged looter who fired at the officers.

The violence reached a fever pitch when rumors were spread through the crowd that cops had instead shot an unarmed child.

The looting, which began inside the city’s Loop, later spread to other neighborhoods, WMAQ reported.

“Our police put themselves at great risk last night,” Lightfoot said at a press conference Monday. “Literally, they were being fired upon as they were working to stop the looters. That can’t be a circumstance that goes unchecked.”

“We’ve got to make sure that if the evidence supports it, these individuals are fully held accountable, and that work is ongoing to identify other suspects.”
