Nick Saban: Alabama football players safer at school than 'running around at home'

University of Alabama coach Nick Saban pushed back Monday on the possible cancellation of college football season this fall, arguing that student-athletes are safer from the coronavirus pandemic while under team supervision.

"I want to play, but I want to play for the players' sake, the value they can create for themselves," Saban told ESPN. "I know I'll be criticized no matter what I say, that I don't care about player safety. Look, players are a lot safer with us than they are running around at home. We have around a 2% positive ratio on our team since the Fourth of July. It's a lot higher than that in society. We act like these guys can't get this unless they play football. They can get it anywhere, whether they're in a bar or just hanging out."

The 2020 college football season is jeopardy this week due to uncertainty related to the pandemic. The commissioners of NCAA’s “Power Five” conferences -- The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-12 and SEC -- held an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss whether the fall season should be canceled or postponed.

Several prominent college football coaches, including University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and Penn State University head coach James Franklin, in calling for the season to proceed. Saban said Alabama tests its players for COVID-19 on a weekly basis.

"We also test anybody that has symptoms and have an open testing site where they can go and get tested as many times as they want or any time they feel like they need to," Saban added. "But our guys aren't going to catch [the virus] on the football field. They're going to catch it on campus. The argument then should probably be, 'We shouldn't be having school.' That's the argument. Why is it, 'We shouldn't be playing football?' Why has that become the argument?"

Critics have argued the health risks for college athletics are too great during the pandemic. A number of college football programs have dealt with positive COVID-19 cases since on-campus workouts resumed this summer.

Star Clemson University quarterback Trevor Lawrence was among several high-profile college football stars to share “#WeWantToPlay” on social media platforms Sunday. President Trump also tweeted in support of a fall college football season.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said the conference has taken a deliberate approach to preparing for a potential season and has yet to make a final decision on whether to play.

"Team supervision" hasn't worked out so well for a number of sports teams, e.g. in MLB.

Social distancing is safer than butting heads with droplets flying play after play.

And old guys like Saban are at high risk.

"New Zealand marks 100 days of virus elimination":

"...
New Zealand got rid of the virus by imposing a strict lockdown in late March when only about 100 people had tested positive for the disease. That stopped its spread. For the past three months, the only new cases have been a handful of returning travellers who have been quarantined at the border.

""It was good science and great political leadership that made the difference," said professor Michael Baker, an epidemiologist at the University of Otago. "If you look around the globe at countries that have done well, it's usually that combination."

"From early on, New Zealand pursued a bold strategy of eliminating the virus rather than just suppressing its spread. Baker said other countries are increasingly looking to New Zealand for answers.

" "The whole Western World has terribly mismanaged this threat, and they're realizing this now," Baker said.

When you present a case, how come you never present the full picture? Like in this instance, you say something about MLB but you don't mention European Soccer, UFC, NBA, NHL etc. All of which of done this no problem.

You're arguments are misleading and lack context always.

The "full picture"? What do you expect from me, to write an article on the subject? A book? This isn't much more than a chat forum, judging by the quality & quantity of most repiies, including yours here. I post many articles, but who reads them except me? I have repeatedly demonstrated how misinformed a number of posters here are.

No problem? Define "no problem"? Would you like to see some examples of "problems" in those sports & others?

Even with extreme safety measures being taken problems are occurring & will continue to do so.

You're arguments are misleading and lack context always.

Nonsense. You have demonstrated no such thing.

Nonsense. You have demonstrated no such thing.

All I'd like you to do is present the full picture if you're going to act intelligent. You present an example that there have been problems in MLB but you don't provide some examples of where things have gone right.

The things that have gone very well don't fit your agenda so you don't present the full narrative. I'm not surprised.

That's a ridiculous request considering that my response's purpose (in post #3 of this thread) was to critique the OP title & first paragraph which i quoted from. Saban gave his opinion & i gave my counter opinion opposing his. End of story.

college football coaches have a lot more control over their players than MLB managers have over their players, you fucking retard.

Have you ever seen a professional athlete fire his coach? I’ve seen Lebron James fire 3 coaches. Never seen a college football player say one single word of disrespect to a coach and live to tell the story in the program, on the other hand.

Such a simple minded twink.

My post didn't even comment on "control", so your foaming at the mouth is missing the mark, as usual.

And my points all still stand uncontested.

BTW, older & professional athletes tend to be smarter & more disciplined than the college boys, which weighs against & may cancel out any alleged "control" point that you have failed to document.

The Marlins are full of garbage players with no clout and they went out and ran a train on strippers and didn't even get punished.

College players wouldn't do that if they were quarantined to play a season.

Fact.

Fact.

Strippers is the rumour circulating.

College players quarantined to play a season? Who has any plans to do such? Normally they'd be receiving class teachings from their profs & doing stuff in their free time. According to your previous posts that would include some involved in irresponsible behaviours that are high risk for C-19 infection, e.g. partying. BTW the pro players should be under quarantine, not allowed to be out with strippers.

The college football players will do more risky behavior if they have a full free season. That's a fact. Why would you argue against a fact?

They'd also have more time to visit their grandparents. Which they would visit more often, if they aren't busy 12 hours a day with football activities and meetings.
