based off of summer pricing research from https://www.newamerica.org/oti/oti-collections/cost-connectivity/

service providers must be raking it in with schools forcing kids to stay home and learn online....

U.S. consumers pay some of the highest broadband prices in the world, at an average $68.38 per month. Most of these plans advertise a temporary promotional rate, after which the monthly cost jumps an additional $22.25, on average. Of the 760 plans we surveyed across Europe, Asia, and North America, U.S. plans are the most expensive. Unfortunately, these higher prices don’t appear to give U.S. consumers faster speeds than consumers abroad.

Moreover, we found that internet pricing typically includes a byzantine maze of ancillary fees and hidden costs. The fees for equipment rentals, data overages, and contract terminations can be substantial. For example, modem rental fees can add an additional 75 percent to the total cost of monthly internet service in the United States, compared to just 30 percent abroad. Consumers struggle to navigate this maze and determine their total cost of service.

Today, U.S. internet service is dominated by just four companies—Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and Charter—and they’ve carved up the market so that most Americans have, at best, one or two providers serving their home. This lack of choice negatively affects the quality and cost of internet service.

It is sad

We pay $95 a month for advertised 3mb download and 1 mb upload (yes you read that correct) We are lucky to get 2.0 mb download most days. Our ISP are crooks and use funding that recieve to upgrade areas that already have highspeed boadband to stay competitive in those markets.

Can't wait until starlink gets up and running.

Ahh,the cable pirate companies. The pricing is worse in big cities particularly the Northeastern cities.

We built in a new neighborhood a few years back and ATT worked a deal with the developer they would cover all the hard cost in supplying the neighborhood if he would not allow any other provider in. SO, if you want any sort of none satellite TV or Internet, ATT is it. There is a place for an Oligopoly type infrastructure network, but the above mentioned type practices are dirty.

Sidenote: AT&T is one of the worst managed companies in the world from a customer stand point. They have setup networks to deter you from getting anything resolved and leave little recourse.

It's a racket and this is their way of combating those cutting the cord who will need the net regardless.

Google Fiber is the only one worth a damn in the United States. Everything else is a joke.

It's not always great in Europe though. Vodafone is as reviled as Comcast in Germany
