1952 Mantle rookie card breaks record as highest price ever for a sports card at $5.2 million

A Mickey Mantle baseball card has shattered a 5-month-old record for highest-selling sports card of all time, going for $5.2 million, PWCC Marketplace announced on Thursday.
The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 9 -- PSA is a grading system that ranges from 1-10 -- took the record from a one-of-one Mike Trout rookie that sold for $3.94 million in August. It's believed that there are only six PSA 9s of that Mantle card still in existence.
Rob Gough, the actor who acquired streetwear brand Dope in 2017, purchased the '52 Mantle, which former NFL lineman Evan Mathis sold in 2018 for $2.88 million.

WOW!! 5.2 million for a 9!?!? I wonder what the 10's are worth? Only card that trumps this one is the Wagner. A Wagner PSA 5 sold for 3.1 million a few years back. The rare PSA 8 is worth in excess of 7.5 million!!

Double wow! Declined an offer of 12 million!?!?!?! Crazy! Colorado attorney Marshall Fogel paid 121,000 for the card in 96. 10,000% return on investment is not too shabby! He's a huge memorabilia collector.

I can't see it holding it's value like traditional cards, but then again, like you said, "nothing shocks me these days!" I would have never thought that the Trout rookie would sell so high! What's to prevent other companies from issuing a single copy of any rookie card?

It’ll hold its value because it’ll be looked at the same as rare art.

Companies do release different versions of cards that are 1/1. I own 40-50.
