Popular yes but prices are insane. I deal in hockey cards as a hobby. The prices on some stuff is just stupid. Unfortunately I had the idea of selling the majority of my stuff before Covid.

When are they gonna start doing that topshot stuff for NFL like they do NBA? Feels like that is a bubble you could speculate on and get in and out.

I would imagine the mass produced cards from the 1980s and early 1990s are still worth next to nothing right? Topps, Donruss, Fleer, etc.

no check your stuff. I did and was mildly surprised

Where can you find a price guide without paying for it online? As a kid the old Beckett was all you needed.

And I heard that cards are pretty much worthless from back in the day unless they are graded professionally. Is that true? I'm so behind on the times with this card stuff..

anything from the mid 80's to mid 90s is fairly worthless. just to mass produced. starting in the mid 90s they started offering autographs, game used, serial #ed cards which are what are holding value these days

Correct! Cards from the late 80's to the early 90's, were overproduced, and unless they are graded (PSA or Beckett) they do not have much value. Here's your price guide.

Ken Griffey's 1989 UP #1 PSA 10, is currently at $2,300 with four days left of bidding.

the refractors and parrelells and all with panini its too much man .. triple rainbow sapphire parrellels .. its too much ..

having said that cards numbered 1-50 too me are very rare for lack of a better word ..

autos are kinda BS .. but relics that are numbered low to me have meaning and value .. that's where I buy ..

a small personal collection of a specific few players and stick to low numbered relics and or parallels .. or auto / relics combo low numbers ..

again choose the guy you collect wisely .. also some nice investment buys out there ive scored , getting them graded a pain in the ass tho which
I haven't done yet but deff have made some great unrealized gains sniping some things on apps for buying and selling

I chose some good guys. Just the wrong era. McGwire and Bonds galore in some old boxes somewhere. Probably have 200+ cards of each. Rookie cards. All the brands. Topps, Fleer, Donruss. Even got the Topps Traded '86 Bonds. '85 Topps McGwire Olympic card was my prize possession at one time..

Was thinking in the late 90's to early 2000's.. They were/are still in the box. But thought.. Damn. Those guys blew up. Those are gonna really be worth something now. I chose wisely. Haha. Nope. Mass production. Then the steroid thing. Can't believe how much money I blew on all that as a kid. ROI? I doubt even 30 years later I made any money.

I was talking too some dude who owned a babe ruth .... long story short , some other guy told him " hey let me take the bat & get it appraised by someone " these two guys barely knew each ( still not sure how they knew each other ) so bat owner lets this guy take the bat & doesn't hear from him for a few days , then two weeks , so now he's panicking & the police are called . the police told him " what the hell were you thinking " ... well the guy ( thief ) was eventually found in another state AFTER he had sold the bat for alot of money to brothers . The bat after a judge got involved now belongs / shared by the original owner & the brothers while a lawyer has possession of the bat & can only be sold with both parties agreeing to a price tag

Maybe I'll get bored and start dabbling again. Was a great hobby as kid.

You want to hear a sour story about choosing the wrong guy? This one is still fresh for me because of the recent records being broken. In the early 90's I worked a summer job, lots of hours good pay. I lost most of it gambling (what else is new!) I thought let me buy some good rookies with the money I have left. So I was debating between Gretzky rookies and Clemens rookies. I still have the old Becket price guides, Gretzky rookie 75 dollars Clemens rookie 175 with the arrows pointing up! I thought Gretzky already had all the records, Clemens still early in his career, plus Baseball way more popular than hockey. So I went with Clemens rookie cards. I now have 2 Clemens PSA 10's and the fucking steroid era just killed the value of the card! Not saying I would have had the Gretzky card in a 10, but I would have probably had a few 9's. I put all my rookies in class cases right from day one. Should have went with my Canadian roots! FUCK!!
