    Thursday’s 6-pack
    NFL leaders in passing yardage:
    817— Derek Carr, LV
    689— Kyler Murray, Ariz
    680— Patrick Mahomes, KC
    675— Justin Herbert, LAC
    655— Tom Brady, TB
    640— Dak Prescott, Dal

    Quote of the Day
“Belichick wanted him out the door, and last year he threw 56 touchdowns. I think that’s a pretty good year.”
Tom Brady Sr, talking about his son’s leaving New England

    Thursday’s quiz
Who played QB for the Carolina Panthers in their two Super Bowls?

    Wednesday’s quiz
Terry Francona managed the Red Sox when they won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

    Tuesday’s quiz
When baseball split into divisions in 1969, Atlanta Braves won the National League West that year; they lost to the Mets in the NLCS.

    ****************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

    13) Tampa Bay Rays clinched their third straight playoff spot Wednesday; they’re 94-59 this year, are jogging to the AL East title. Kevin Cash has done a hell of a job managing them; too bad they don’t draw very well. Have a feeling that when baseball expands in a couple years, the Rays could wind up north of the border, in Montreal maybe?

    12) Since 1990, NFL teams that started a season 0-2 made the playoffs only 11.6% of the time; those odds will go up, since the season is now 17 games instead of 16, but still, 0-2 ain’t good.

    11) Since 2000, these NFL teams have started the most different QB’s:
    29— Cleveland
26— Chicago (Justin Fields will be #26 this week)
    24— Washington
    23— Miami

    10) Jeff Driskel is the backup QB for Houston tonight; technically he is their #4 QB, but Tyros Taylor is hurt and Deshaun Watson has other issues, so rookie Davis Mills and Driskel are it for the Texans this week.

Hopefully Driskel writes a book someday; he played four years for the Florida Gators, then played his last year of college at Louisiana Tech. 49ers drafted him in the 6th round of the 2016 draft, but he never played for them. Here is Driskel’s resume:

    2018: Bengals 1-4 as starter, 1,003 PY, 6 TD’s, 2 INT
    2019: Lions 0-3 as starter, 685 PY, 4 TD’s, 4 INT
    2020: Broncos 0-1 as starter, 432 PY, 3 TD’s, 2 INT

Four years, four teams. Quite an experience.

    9) Kyle Schwarber has nine home runs in 10 games against the Mets this year.

    8) Speaking of the Mets, Taijuan Walker gave up six runs in 2+ IP in Boston Wednesday; Walker was 7-3, 2.06 at the All-Star break this year, made the All-Star team, but in 13 starts since then, Walker is 0-8, 8.03 in 13 starts. A disturbing reversal of fortune.

    7) Cardinals 10, Brewers 2— St Louis won its 11th straight game, have a 4.5 game lead over the Reds/Phillies for the second Wild Card spot.

    6) Giants 8, Padres 6— Buster Posey had four hits, scored three runs; Giants have a 2-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West.

    5) NFL QB changes:
    — Davis Mills gets his first NFL start for Houston tonight.
    — Jacoby Brissett starts for Miami this week when they visit Las Vegas.
    — Justin Fields gets his first NFL when the Bears visit Cleveland.

    4) Minnesota Timberwolves fired President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas; weird time to do it, so close to the start of training camp.

Timberwolves will switch ownership to Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore in 2023; you wonder if they wanted Rosas out, and let current owner Glen Taylor do the dirty work for them.

    3) Braves’ OF Eddie Rosario hit for the cycle the other night; in the four at-bats where he got his hits, he saw a total of five pitches, which has to be some kind of a record.

    2) Raiders’ kicker Daniel Carlson admitted his 14-point performance in Pittsburgh LW led to his losing a fantasy football game where he was playing against himself.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Braves, Brewers, Giants. Wild Card: St Louis @ Los Angeles
AL: Rays, White Sox, Astros. Wild Card: New York @ Boston

    Tuesday’s 6-pack
Some more interesting spreads for Week 4 of NFL:
    — Carolina @ Dallas (-5)
    — NJ Giants @ New Orleans (-8)
    — Kansas City (-5.5) @ Philadelphia
    — Houston @ Buffalo (-17.5)
    — Arizona @ LA Rams (-6.5)
    — Seattle @ San Francisco (-3)

    Quote of the Day
“I can’t fully understand why anyone gets in a huddle.”
Nick Saban, an old defensive coordinator

    Tuesday’s quiz
In the movie The Hangover, what did Stu (Ed Helms) do for a job?

    Monday’s quiz
Jay Cutler (102) has started the most games at QB for the Chicago Bears.

    Sunday’s quiz
Drew Bledsoe was the Patriots’ starting QB before Tom Brady.

    ************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) This week in 1974, big league pitcher Tommy John had the UCL in his left arm repaired by Dr Frank Jobe; Astros’ pitching coach Brent Strom was the second guy to have that surgery.

Obviously, Tommy John surgery has helped a ton of pitchers resume the careers; shouldn’t Dr Jobe be in the Baseball Hall of Fame? They put freakin’ Marvin Miller in the Hall last month; all he did was make the players wealthy. Did he really help the game of baseball at all?

Dr Frank Jobe needs to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    12) Dallas 41, Philadelphia 21:
    — This was one of the worst Monday night games ever. Seriously.
    — Philly’s first 7 drives: 24 plays, 143 yards, outscored 7-0 by Dallas defense.
    — Eagles’ RB’s had three carries the whole game. Three.
    — Philly had a defensive TD in first quarter.

    — Dallas scored TD’s on three of its first five drives.
    — Cowboys have eight takeaways in three games (+5).
    — Dallas won field position by ten yards.
    — Last 4+ years, Dallas is 10-3 ATS in NFC East home games.

    11) In the interest of fairness, I watched the Eagle-Cowboy game on the Manning Channel on ESPN2, out of curiosity more than anything else. Can’t criticize something unless you listen to them first, so I tuned in.

    Some observations:
    — It was much better than I thought it would be.
    — They had four guests: Matthew Stafford, Lebron James, Nick Saban, Chris Long, which added to the quality of the show.
    — Learned some good stuff, so in that sense I’m glad I watched.

To me, they’re doing this to keep Eli in the public eye so he’ll get elected into the Hall of Fame when he first becomes eligible in a few years (he doesn’t deserve to get in the first year, but he’ll definitely get inducted eventually).

For this format to work, they have to be critical when teams screw things up; the Eagle offense was so bad in this game, they let Jalen Hurts off the hook a little bit, but overall, it was worth the time.

Thing is, they’re taking the next three weeks off; no more Mannings until Week 7, possibly because of conflicts with the baseball playoffs.

    10) Week 4 in the NFL is Subplot Weekend:
    — Obviously, Brady/Gronkowski going back to Foxboro is a big deal.
    — Andy Reid takes his Chiefs to Philly to play the Eagles; luckily, coach Reid got out of hospital Monday morning. We hope he is feeling better.
    — Urban Meyer is will be back in Ohio Thursday night, when his Jaguars visit Cincinnati; Meyer was 83-9 in seven years at Ohio State. He is already 0-3 with Jacksonville.
    — Kevin Stefanski brings his Cleveland Browns to Minnesota Sunday; Stefanski worked for the Vikings from 2006-19, under three head coaches, so this game has to be special for him.

    9) If you’re into fantasy football, here are the leaders in WR targets so far:
    34— Davante Adams, GB
33— Cooper Kupp, Rams, Keenan Allen, LAC, Darren Waller, LV
    32— Brandin Cooks, Hst
31— Stefan Diggs Buff, Mike Williams LAC, DJ Moore, Caro

    8) New Orleans Saints are 2-1, but they’ve only had three plays of 20+ yards. With Drew Brees in New Orleans, we came to expect an explosive offense, but Brees is retired, so now they depend lot more on their defense.

    7) Las Vegas Raiders’ points in second half/OT: 23-17-19 points, so they’ve been explosive after halftime, with two of their three wins in overtime.

    6) Auburn fired its first-year WR’s coach Cornelius Williams; they’ve played four games, it is still baseball season, and they fired an assistant coach. Must be an interesting backstory there.

    5) NFL divisional trends in non-divisional games:
    — NFC East home teams are 0-4 ATS out of division.
    — NFC North home teams are 4-0 ATS out of division.
    — AFC North teams are 1-4 ATS as favorites, 4-1 as underdogs out of division.
    — AFC South home teams are 1-5 ATS at home out of division.

    4) During the NBA lockout in 2011, Cowboys/Seahawks both offered Lebron James a contract to play tight end in the NFL, which would’ve been interesting.

    3) St Louis Cardinals have won 16 games in a row; their starting pitchers have only seven of those games- they’ve been winning lot of games in late innings.

    2) Washington Nationals’ 1B Josh Bell grew up in Texas, where high school football is a really big deal, but his dad got hurt playing football when he was young, so he wouldn’t let Josh play high school football, which would’ve put his baseball career at risk.

Seeing how Josh Bell is making $6,350,000 this season, his dad was smart.

    1) NFL rookie QB’s are 1-10 ATS this season; the seven first-time head coaches are 7-14 ATS.

You guys didn’t stick up for me. I’d like to professionally ask for a trade.’ The question is, does anyone want him? I’m not paying $200 million for a guy who will not be aggressive and will not shoot in playoff time.”
Shaquille O’Neal, talking about Ben Simmons

    Quote of the Day
“We’ve been pretty successful in the last few years, but we have not beat a top-10 program or a top-five program. For us to do that today on the road is a big step for us. It’ll bring some other things that we’ve got to be able to handle, some maybe notoriety of some things that our kids will be able to handle. But everything that’s been thrown at them so far, they’ve done a really, really good job of [handling], and I would expect nothing less.”
    Cincinnati Bearcats coach Luke Fickell

    Friday’s 6-pack
    Some interesting college football spreads:
    — Utah @ USC (-3)
    — LSU @ Kentucky (-3)
    — Oklahoma (-3) vs Texas (@ Dallas)
    — Arkansas @ Ole Miss (-5.5)
    — Penn State @ Iowa (-2)
    — Notre Dame (-1) @ Virginia Tech

    Quote of the Day
“When all is said and done, usually more is said than done.”
    Anonymous

    Friday’s quiz
Who was the Seahawks’ starting QB before Russell Wilson?

    Thursday’s quiz
John Candy was once part owner of the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts with Wayne Gretzky and the guy who owned the NHL’s LA Kings.

    Wednesday’s quiz
Falcons’ QB Matt Ryan played his college football at Boston College.

    *************************

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) Rams 26, Seahawks 17:
    — Stafford threw for 365 yards in his first outdoor game this year.
    — Woods caught 12 passes for 150 yards.
    — Rams outgained Seattle, 476-354.
    — LA in 2nd half: 32 plays, 301 yards, 3 TD’s, FG on six drives.

    — QB Wilson hurt middle finger on right hand, didn’t play 4th quarter.
    — Seattle scored 10 points on backup QB Geno Smith’s three drives.
    — Rams won seven of last nine series games.
    — Seattle’s last five Thursday games have all been at home.

    12) Astros 6, White Sox 1:
    — Alvarez, Brantley both knocked in two runs.
    — McCullers threw 6.2 scoreless IP.

    11) Rays 5, Red Sox 0:
    — Leadoff hitter Arozarena scored 3 of Tampa Bay’s 5 runs.
    — Boston had nine hits, were 1-7 with RISP.

    10) Bowling Green is the only college football team that is 5-0 ATS: Clemson, Missouri and New Mexico are all 0-5 ATS.

    9) By my calculations, Kyrie Irving will earn $425,807 per game this season; do the math if he can’t play in the Nets’ 41 home games, because he won’t get vaccinated.

    8) Was pretty cool to see Juan Soto and Nationals’ hitting coach Kevin Long at Dodger Stadium Wednesday night, rooting for ex-teammates Scherzer/Turner in the NL Wild Card game.

    7) Justin Turner’s career:
    — 2 years with Orioles: .111 BA, .226 OB%, .337 OPS, 2 runs, 3 RBI
    — 4 years with Mets: .265 BA, .326 OB%, .696 OPS, 82 runs, 86 RBI
    — 8 years with LA: .298 BA, .379 OB%, .877 OPS, 591 runs, 582 RBI

    Max Muncy’s career:
    — 2 years with A’s: .195BA, .290 OB%, .611 OPS, 27 runs, 17 RBI
    — 4 years with LA: .246 BA, .371 OB%, .890 OPS, 307 runs, 298 RBI

Dodgers apparently do a superior job of developing hitters.

    6) Lakers’ SF Trevor Ariza hurt his ankle, is out at least eight weeks.

    5) Cleveland Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield partially tore the labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder couple weeks ago, is playing through it.
