I umpired slow pitch softball at the top level and I know softball isn't baseball, but I'm in the Hall of Fame for umpiring so I know a little bit about the rules etc. The call on Bryant because the catch set up inside and the pitch was outside should have no bearing on the call. A strike is a strike and a ball is a ball. I hate hearing announcers say the ump didn't call it because of where the catcher was set up. If pitchers had that kind of control, they wouldn't walk anyone. It makes me sick.
Officials love to make hero calls, makes them part of the game, they think they're going to look smart but they really are just making an ass out of themselves
Often times the biggest calls, or non calls, happen in the biggest spots. Hence they think they're fucking heros
