AN ONLINE GAME? i mean, i always thought the main thing that made someone a pro, was being able to read a persons "tells".

you cant do that online. all you can do online is look for a repeat on the way someone plays hands when they are in certain situations.

online, i always write down what they started out with(if they make it to showdown or show thier cards), so then i know what kinds of hands they are playing, that is one of the main things and just if they ever bet with nothing at the end or stuff like that.

RPM - good topic. Yes a real pro still has an edge in an on-line game. There is MUCH more involved than only picking up tells in the game. Starting hands, figuring pot odds, picking up trends, reading the other players etc.....

I will say playing on-line does take away that avenue away of picking up tells but it does not even begin to completely neutralize the advantage a pro has.

Well in an online game you don't tip the dealer, and rake is lower.

Also, you can play more hands per hour and even multiple tables at once. So even though the competition may be tougher or you don't have tells.. there is still a significant advantage.

Other than what's already been mentioned, there are some tells even in on-line poker (not sure I should mention them since I will be playing with you folk

Here's a decent article link comparing on-line to B&M (that's Brick and Mortar for the neophytes):

(check out part 1 as well)

Another very good link for playing on-line and describing it

Tekari,

While the rake might have been lower to start, most on-line places take 5%, capped at $3. I actually think that the on-line places could do a LOT more for the players rake-wise. But, people (myself included) are willing to pay it, so why should they not take what they can?

Good Luck,

The bottom link above sums it up very well at the end of the guide:

That is the key lesson: Playing winning online poker is the science, craft and art of mastering things most players don't even think about. Good luck.

Hey RPM, Excellent Topic!!!

An experienced, skilled poker player will have a long term advantage over the recreational, unskilled, amateur player. When I say "long term" I mean over a long period of time percentage wise. A good professional player can win overall MOST of the time whether it be in a live casino game, or in a live internet game. (I know this to be a FACT.) Of course knowing your players DO help, but sometimes NOT knowing your players can be to your advantage also. For example, there are "tells" your opponents give when they have or DON'T have a hand. Obviously playing on the net you don't "SEE" these tells, but not ALL tells are tells you can see with your eyes. There are other things as well.
The bottom line is to play YOUR A game and NOT worry about what YOUR OPPONENTS are doing. When you start worrying about the other nine bodies in the game, it usually means YOU'RE the loser, and you're on "tilt" at the time...
More advice to come later...

Have A Great Day!

Believe it or not, there are tells in online poker. 1 of the huge tells is how fast the opposing players clicks to bet, raise, or check. If you doubt me, go watch a game of 10/20 or 20/40 for about an hour.

Now I know some people have bad connections online, but over time u can weed out the bad connections, or even check the other players connection speed (at some sites)

Watch the chat also, you would amazed at the tells that come from it over time.

TIP, When sitting at a poker table, be it "online" or "live" always try and sit at the table with more chips then anyone at the table, you will have a significant advantage psychologically over your opponents. Also, if playing "live" ask for a seat cushion to sit on. This seat cushion plays some vital roles: provides comfort, elevates you above the rest of the table, hence giving you a psychological advantage over your opponents and gives you a great view of the board.

I wish I could give praise for that advice, but I forgot where I read it.

By the way, I'm the orange cat

The single most important factor in poker is the strength of your opponents,

you must accurately gauge your own strength and find weaker players. Particularly the two or three players sitting to your direct right, as the money moves around the table clockwise, and these players will be the source of your winnings, most of the time.

BTW I'm upto about 550,000 online hands at over 25 different rooms, so if you have any specific questions, fire away!

Conventional wisdom has Party as the home to the weakest players currently, due to the TV ads on the travel channel broadcasts.

Traditionally, recently, Ladbrokes and WIllHill have the weakest games. Find a way to beard in Stu, it will be worth your while.

I do play at WSEX and the high limit games there are usually very tough at least the last six months or so, Cupcake and Bricktop are top players.(of course you know that)

But, like I posted above, I seek out weaker players to play against and consequently do not have enough data on any of the top WSEX' players to make any sound ratings.
