A couple of weeks ago Carl Ichan, one of the world’s most well-known financiers and owner of the Sands in Atlantic City, decided he wanted to become involved in the tremendous growth of the poker industry. So, the Sands will be hosting a tournament in November (after the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods) for 10 days, and the $10,000 no-limit hold’em championship event will guarantee $1 million to the winner. Ichan’s goal is to market the tournament not only to poker players, but to businessmen who have never played in a real poker tournament. Tournament director extraordinaire Matt Savage is looking forward to building this tournament from scratch.
An abundance of new poker books have come out over the last several months. Some of them have even been on the bestseller lists, and I am not referring to the Card Player bestseller list either. Here is a list of the new books that are available through Card Player, and a brief description of each. I know you are probably thinking to yourself, “Jeff sure is pushing these books; why?” I’ll tell you why. I promised Greg Dinkin a few months ago that I would mention Amarillo Slim’s new book. Greg was concerned about Slim making all of the television appearances and taking all of the credit even though they were Greg’s childhood hustling stories.

Greg Dinkin and Amarillo Slim Preston have combined their efforts to show everyone what gambling, poker, and hustling is all about in a very entertaining book called Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People.
Jim McManus’ Positively Fifth Street is a very entertaining book that discusses his experience playing in the 2000 World Series of Poker, as well as the Ted Binion murder trial.
Phil Hellmuth wrote Play Poker Like the Pros. Hellmuth’s book is written in a manner that should help beginners venture into the poker world.
Tom McEvoy and T.J. Cloutier have been questioned so many times about how they would play a tournament hand that they wrote Championship Tournament Practice Hands. This book takes a look at many big hands at the WSOP, and provides their opinions on their optimal play.
Dana Smith, Tom McEvoy, and Ralph Wheeler combined to write Championship Tables at the World Series of Poker. This book is great for touching up on your WSOP championship trivia.
