METS' FLOYD TO HAVE SEASON-ENDING SURGERY
New York Mets left fielder Cliff Floyd plans to play Monday, then have season-ending surgery on his troublesome right Achilles' tendon at the end of the month.
"The doctor said for it to be 95 or 100 percent, it's going to take four or five months," Floyd said before Friday night's game against the Colorado Rockies. "It's unfortunate because I really wanted to play the rest of the season."
Floyd, 30, entered the day batting .271 with 18 homers and 62 RBIs in his first year with the Mets. He has played in pain most of the season, visibly struggling to run the bases or track down balls in the outfield.
"I learned a lot about myself this season playing hurt," said Floyd, who has fought leg injuries throughout his 11-year career. "I tried to push myself and play hard."

BACK INJURY SIDELINES PARK FOR SEASON
Rangers right-hander Chan Ho Park will miss the rest of the season with a back injury, another setback for the pitcher since signing a $65 million contract with Texas before last season.
Yamil Kleen examined Park on Friday and recommended he stop throwing the rest of the season because of muscular and nerve weakness in his back.
Park will meet with Kleen again in October. And he will begin a throwing program soon after to get ready for the 2004 season.
"He's made improvements in a lot of areas," Texas head trainer Jamie Reed said. "But there are still some areas of concern. The doctor recommended that he not throw the rest of the season and prepare for spring training."

AROUND THE HORN
Mariners: purchased the contract of right-hander Brian Sweeney from Triple-A Tacoma.
To clear space on the 25-man roster, the Mariners optioned catcher Pat Borders to Tacoma. To make room for Sweeney on the 40-man roster, left-hander Matt Thornton was recalled from Tacoma and placed on the 60-day disabled list.
Orioles: Rick Helling was designated for assignment, a move predicated by his recent struggles on the mound and the team's commitment to youth. The Orioles filled his place on the roster by purchasing the contract of left-hander John Parrish from Double-A Bowie. Parrish will work out of the bullpen in place of Eric DuBose, who will replace Helling in the starting rotation.
Pirates: Pittsburgh acquired second baseman Bobby Hill from the Chicago Cubs, adding yet another middle infielder in a deal that threatens shortstop Jack Wilson 's future with the team.
Rockies: placed backup catcher Bobby Estalella on the 15-day disabled list and purchased Mandy Romero 's contract from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
