Cubs (Zambrano) at Cards (Morris)

The St. Louis Cardinals notched four runs in the eighth inning Wednesday night to defeat the Chicago Cubs in the middle game of this three-game series, 4-2. The Cardinals closed as $1.35 home favorites, while the combined six runs dipped ‘under’ the closing 8 ½-run total.

The Cardinals stayed one game behind Houston in the NL Central, while Chicago fell 1½-games off the lead. The Cubs are now 5-24 at Busch Stadium since the start of the 2000 season.

Carlos Zambrano toes the rubber for the Cubs attempting to continue a hot streak that has seen him capture four of his last five starts. The recent surge has seen the right-hander improve his record to 12-9 and lower his ERA to a nifty 2.94.

Zambrano is 7-4 in his first 13 road outings, and his 2.64 ERA is lower than his 3.24 ERA in 13 home assignments. The Cubs are 4-0 in Zambrano’s last four road starts and 6-1 in his last seven overall efforts.

Zambrano lost his only start against the Cardinals this season (May 19) despite allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings. The Cubs lost the game 2-0, with the score ducking well ‘under’ the closing eight-run total.

Matt Morris takes the ball for the Cardinals trying to register his first win since June 25. The right-hander made his first start since July 21 last week and yielded one run in five innings during a 5-3 home victory against Philadelphia. However, Morris was not involved in the decision.

Morris is 5-3 in 13 home outings, but his 4.54 ERA is more than one run higher than his 3.20 ERA in eight road assignments. The ‘over’ is 6-1 in Morris’ last seven home appearances.

Morris is 2-0 in three starts against the Cubs this season after surrendering just seven runs in 22 combined innings. That includes a complete-game four-hit shutout on May 19 as a $1.90 home favorite.

Brian Runge, who will be behind home plate for the series finale, has seen the ‘over’ go 18-10 in his 28 games behind the dish. There has been an average of 10.6 runs per game when Runge calls balls and strikes.

Most offshore sports books opened St. Louis as a $1.40 home favorite, with the total set at 8 ½-under (minus $1.20).

They lost a tough game last night, and their bullpen is shaky. Plus, Williams has pitched well against them this season.

I don't see Morris pitching as well as Williams did last night. I have the Cubs because of Zambrano. I'm hoping Z will go further than Wood did last night so the Cubs' bullpen won't have to give up more runs. Even if they do, I'm hoping the Cubs will already have salted the game away against Morris.
