Yankees (Contreras) at Red Sox (Lowe)

The battle for the AL East lead continues Friday when the Yankees travel to Boston for a three-game series with the Red Sox.

The Yankees moved 4 ½ games ahead of idle Boston by defeating the White Sox 7-5 to salvage the final game of a three-game series. The New Yorkers were bombed in the first two contests by scores of 13-2 and 11-2.

Joe Torre’s troops are a sparkling 42-23 on the road, with the ‘over’ going 34-29. They have closed in the underdog role just 11 times this season, and have failed to cover on seven occasions.

The last five meetings between Boston and New York this season have dipped ‘under’ the closing total, including the last three at Fenway Park

Jose Contreras has captured his first three starts since being inserted in the starting rotation. The right-hander has pitched seven innings or more while allowing two runs or less in all three efforts. In fact, Contreras has yielded just two runs in 21 combined innings for a miniscule 0.86 ERA.

Boston had gone 6-1 prior to Thursday’s off day, with the ‘over’ going 6-2 in its last eight efforts. The Red Sox have scored six runs or more in each of their last eight contests.

Derek Lowe gets the ball for Boston trying to improve on a 13-6 record. However, the right-hander has been much better at home (8-2, 3.13 ERA) than on the road (5-4, 6.78).

Lowe is 1-0 in three starts against the Yankees this season. He has surrendered 10 runs on 27 hits (three home runs) in 18 1/3 combined innings. He has gone six innings or more on all three occasions, with the ‘over’ going 2-0-1.

Boston is a stellar 45-22 at home, with the ‘over’ going 38-25. The club is 64-44 as a favorite.

Most offshore sports books opened the Red Sox as slight $1.15 home favorites, with the total set at 9 ½ ‘over’ (minus $1.20).
