That's a good question a2345exxx. I'm guessing it was called that because back in 1903, when it was first held, it was a contest of all of the baseball teams in the world at that time. In other words, the baseball world was having its contest.

I could be wrong though.

Maybe a bit arrogant but basically true, unless you think any other teams in the world would have a chance to win it?

Here we go again with the little brother jealousy syndrome. I wish you people would find another country to scrutinize. Everytime someone blows a fart in America, some euro trasher wants to jump out and say "hmm, Did you just fart over there in the US? Who do you think you are? thats arrogant... blah blah blah. Let me break out my euro rule book and magnifying glass and get to the bottom of this American conspiracy.

Um... maybe its because the sport was invented in America and is called America's pastime. Let's not over-analyze this now. Don't read into it. Its just the name. It just so happens to be the pinnacle level of achievement for any baseball player as well.

You people are pathetic.

believe the first one way back at the turn of
the century was sponsored by something maybe a
newspaper or magazine called ''the world.''

just seems that if you really wanted to find the best team in the world, one should look further than two countries.

the pinnacle of achievement when it comes to 'football' in europe (which also seems to be the past-time) is the champions league but its not called the world league.

it's not as though the series pits city vs. city or country v. country in the sense of residency/place of birth etc.

The "World" is just a consideration of the world's best "players" as opposed to nations or cities.

The recent movement of Japanese/Korean players and more of Latin America sure adds more validity to that, but still I'm sure it's not the most accurate colloboration of the best of the best, but it's pretty damn close, and that's what matters.
