NEW YORK : Panama's Fernando Seguignol's playing rights were sold by Major League Baseball's New York Yankees to the Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League.
The 29-year-old first baseman batted 1-for-7, .143, with one walk in seven games for the Yankees last year, spending most of the season in developmental leagues. He led the International League with 28 home runs and a .341 average.
Seguignol, the first Yankees prospect in 12 years to be named International League Most Valuable Player, learned he was to be dropped from the roster last month so New York could make roster room for free agent infielder Tony Clark.
The Yankees also released prospect Drew Henson from his Major League Baseball contract so the two-sport prospect could pursue a career in American football.
