Just a heads up to let the serious baseball handicappers know that Gamblers Book Club just got in Phil Erwin's Baseball Insight Annual and Pitching Aces. In my opinion these are the two best source books on the market.

Hope I don't get accused of being a shill for either the GBC or Phil Erwin.

Thanks Mr. Misanthrope,

I agree, by the way. I'm also picking up Baseball Prospectus, to help me find new ways of studying the game.

Hey Mook, any chance you're a denizen of The Hardline on The Little Ticket?

I'm a DFW native who relocated to FL seven years ago and TLT is one of key things I miss about not being there.

I bought the Robert Ross book a few years ago and I really like a lot of his ideas. His Hockey book is really good also.

I bought Mike Lees book ( too much backfitting of stats to fit his "systems") but some of the ideas make some sense. But if you follow the book I think you would be betting 15 games a day (Buy the Ross book)

Also I think a good idea is to buy a Fantasy baseball magazine before the year . lots of good stats over a few seasons, they lay out who will be used and how by teams. usually a good source of info for 5 bucks

Hey Barman,

I do catch the ticket when I'm driving around in the afternoon. Some of their stuff almost drives me off the road. I miss some of the old stuff, when they'd write songs, or have fake Jerry Jones on.
Truthfully, I'm more of a Jim Rome guy now.

Hey NJ,

I've been reading Mike Lee's book, and because it's so old, I'm wondering how his systems have worked in recent seasons. Any ideas? Anyway, I like the logic, but am not convinced of the percentages.
What do you know/think of this, and why do you like the Ross book better?
thanks,
mook

Patriot,
Can I find a sample on the internet? Is it an update of his books, or different?

the Lee book: the bet on all the home dogs will probably kill you over the course of the season,
i just think his theory puts you on way too many games every day..and over that many games if you dont win you are gonna get slaughtered
..plus he advocates avoiding ALL teams -170 or more...this sounds good in theory but every so often they win. he doesnt even mention pitching in the book. not a fan of that book

the ross book is very good , plus he includes examples of why he makes certain plays , how to prepare for each season ,theories on types of pitchers,...i really like his book.

Mook.i got both bases books,Ross's and Lee's.

Lee's is not as techinical as Ross and is a little dated but it gives you some ideas on systems and is only like 10 bucks....I am more of a systems guy, cause I just don't have time to anylise every game.

Patriot.
But didnt you find that too many of Lees angles put you on too many bad teams? The Home dog/the not taking any favorite of -170 or more.
Just wondering.

Some of the Ross ideas do not involve you analyzing every game. I liked makin a list of pitchers that are just horrid and going against them. The scrubs, the has beens, etc.

I've been capping bases for 20+ years now,
had Lee's book since the mid 80's, that -170
sure has changed since then, line way higher
now, used too be hardly any faves over 170,
now some days half the games are over that!
I'll have to look for Ross's book, wish Chip
Reese would write a book on baseball although
somewhat shorter than Doyle' poker book. Chip's
the best on baseball. I look for -170 faves or
less with a pitcher that has had 2 good starts
(6+ innings, less than 3 ERA) and have scored
6+ runs last 2-3 games. Have both pitching and
bats on form. Somedays hard to find, have to pick yourspots. GL

Mr. NJ....Yeah your right...I don't think a lot of whats in the book fits into todays game.

The other thing is I never lay,at the most I will lay -120....I usally take a team that has a good record in another teams park...I don't care whos pitching.Like the Expos always play the Braves tough in Atlanta...so if there is a 3 game series in Atlanta I play the Expos every game using a progression...if they win the first game I quit...I might look at a ptchers record when they are over -180 for a game...some pitchers are terrible heavy favs. They might be 15-6 overall but only 2-4 as a heavy fav. I'll bet against....I'll try to post this year..it might look ugly at times but I grind it out and have profited the last 2 years...all dogs all the time.

Please do, Patriot, I want to follow your results, as I'm trying to discipline myself to avoid the expensive favorite.
