San Diego Padres +106
(listing Lawrence)

I’ll be on the Padres a lot this year while they continue to get the best of the price.

How bad is the Dodger lineup that they will trade at least one top prospect for a head case that has done more harm to his team through attitude than he ever produced at the plate? My point is when all you hear is how important chemistry and sacrifice is for a team then why do you mortgage your future for the complete opposite? Perhaps because your lineup can’t compete the way it stands and trying to finish anywhere but last is difficult with people like Dave Roberts, Alex Cora, Cesaer Izturis, Adrian Beltre in your lineup and Robin Ventura is the big bat out of your infield. A lineup that hit .243 as a team last year and scored 574 runs, (both league lows). The fact is it’s going to be a another long summer for the Dodgers.

On the other hand there’s some real excitement a hundred miles to the south. New ballpark, new team, and a very new prospectus for a bright future.

The Padres have a solid lineup filled with a great mix of proven veterans and a couple of highly touted prospects. There’s lots of excitement over Khalil Greene at short. 3b Sean Burroughs will only improve on decent numbers. Phil Nevin will take up where he left off after missing the first half of the year due to a shoulder injury. Mark Loretta who has a great glove and very rare addition of .314 average coming out of 2b. A outfield of Brian Giles, Jay Payton, and Ryan Klesko. And the last piece to this winning club is behind the plate in Ramon Hernandez, (21 dingers last year).

The only department that L.A. has over San Diego is in the pen and the difference between Rod Beck, Japan import Akinori Otsuka, Ismail Valdes, and Trevor Hoffman isn’t that great of a gap from Guillermo Mota, Paul Shuey, and Eric Gagne. After all you need to have the lead for Eric Gagne to have any real value.

Brian Lawrence has always pitched well against the Dodgers going 7-3 with a 1.95 era in his career, (69 hits and 15 bb in 87.2 innings). Hideo Nomo has not had the same success against the Padres. Even with their old lineups, that can’t be compared to this season’s version, the best he could muster is a 8-8 record and a era of 4.58.

MLB to date 1-0 +1.87

(well scratch Shuey...I missed he ruptured a tendon in his right thumb and will be sidelined for approximately six weeks. Can it get any worse for L.A.?)
