BOSTON -- The Major League Baseball Commissioner's Office rejected the recall of pitcher Erik Bedard on Monday, and the left-hander will be optioned to Triple-A Ottawa until his scheduled April 17 start.
The Commissioner's Office said the Orioles violated league rules when they recalled Bedard for his April 10 start against Tampa Bay. After optioning Bedard to Ottawa on March 31, the club waited the minimum 10 days until activating him, but the league office stipulates that the 10-day period has to cover the regular season.
The Orioles began the season April 4, so Bedard was not eligible to be activated until April 14. Club spokesman Bill Stetka said the team would rescind the designating for assignment of outfielder Jack Cust and send Bedard to Ottawa. Cust will not return to the team, Stetka said, but will be either released, traded or outrighted depending on if he clears waivers.
The club will recall another player from Triple-A Ottawa, possibly outfielder Darnell McDonald or Tim Raines Jr., for the next few days until Bedard is activated.
Bedard pitched three innings Saturday in his first Major League start, allowing three runs and six hits in an 11-3 win over the Devil Rays. He was named the fifth starter during the final week of Spring Training.
