More or less - 7 innings, 5 runs, 8 hits, 4 walks, 111 pitiches, and 7 strikeouts. Pujols took him deep in the 1st with no one on.

Personally I never bet big name pitchers like Johnson as huge favorites. I know there are times when laying the wood is worth it, but not for me. btw. The Diamondbacks tied this game up at 5-5.

Hard to say, a lot of good pitchers are going to get banged around by this Cardinal lineup this season.

2 or three years? I'snt he 41? He is down 5 mph and last year lefties hit over .300 against him. I think this year will be his last

I am afraid the D-Backs are finished for the year. Brenly is on the griddle. Johnson was washed up last year. It was a good confidence builder to tell Randy he was tipping his pitchers to explain away his bad season last year. They are probably telling Randy the hitters are leaning over the plate so you will probably see a bench clearing brawl in Randy's next start after he beans an opposing hitter.

I am guessing he is hoping to get traded for one last pennant run this year. I can't see the Colangelos keeping this team together, it is really just a continuation of the necessary breakup that people were talking about even as they were winning the Series. Maybe he is doing Jerry a favor by sticking around and giving the team a chance to get something of value around trade deadline and getting some other franchise to pay off the rest of his contract.

There's always next year, like in 75, 90-93, 99 &

Interesting start to the season ...

Mussina, Johnson & Pedro looking very ordinary IMO.

Maybe the torch is getting passed to guys like Wood, Prior, Beckett, Vasquez?

It's more than just losing his heat, he's lost his control as well. There is still a lot left in this season so perhaps he can put together some K's.

There is money to be made betting against this guy.

I have a feeling you'll be able to add Greg Maddux to this list as well before the year's out.

I'm hoping you're right SK. Maddux is at -211 for the Pittsburgh game. Perhaps Benson is worth a shot at +193 for the Pirates.

Im pretty sure this happened last season as well. The big aces sucked balls, at the beginning of the season.

Pedro, clemens Both got rocked their 1st start. all 3 of oakland's aces as well I believe. They got it turned around by the end of the season tho. I think the pitchers should be given the benefit of the doubt as to their skill level. I wouldnt call them dead just yet

Too bad I forgot about the Pitts/ChCubs game with Benson going at +193. Final score, Pit 13, ChC 2.

COULD BE THE END OF THE ROAD FOR RANDY...

Johnson's season ends on career strikeout No. 4,875
SAN DIEGO — A few hours before his predetermined inning Sunday, in all probability the last of his decorated, 21-year career, Randy Johnson said he wouldn't be nostalgic on the mound.
"That's just not the way I'm wired," he said.
But preparations were made. Johnson's entire family traveled to San Diego for the game. His son, Tanner, was the batboy.
And Johnson's seventh inning served as a "This Is Your Life" summation of his career: A little wild, a little unpredictable, and some heat that made all the difference. The San Diego Padres tied the game with an unearned run, but the Big Unit darted a called pitch at the knees to slugger Adrian Gonzalez to end the inning.
It was the 4,875th strikeout of his career, second only to Nolan Ryan's major-league record of 5,714.
"I don't know what Randy's going to do, but he came back and showed he's still got stuff," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "The way he finished, a called strike to a great hitter "... if he does end that way, it's a pretty nice way to end it."
Johnson, 46, tore his rotator cuff July 5 but was determined to end the season on his own terms. After returning Sept. 19, he had a 6.23 ERA in five relief appearances but struck out six in 41/3 innings.
