Sabathia has done well so far but did get touched some by KC...

Pedro has been all over the place and now that he has had some time to settle down is this -150 a good price

or is the -142 on sabathia just as good or better?

Ortiz has spiced things up some and Mueller likes to hit in the bottom of the order but between daubach mccarty kapler and millar this team is starting to resemble the portland sea dogs on the field as well as at the plate

Will they pick it up for pedro tonight or are they going to be glad to get this game over with tonight?

I've been heavily fading the sox lately at the wrong times but it seems like now would be a good time to get one last chance at cashing in on this pedro scandal...

any thoughts?

one more thought

the sox used 4 bullpen guys due to kims bedcrapping yesterday...

had they not had those 4 guys the game might not have been as easy

Malaska wasnt too good but williamson embree and foulke did their job. Also arroyo did what he needed to do as well

tonight the fresh arms are dinardo and timlin

also we will likely see foulke if things are going ok...

However if pedro gets rocked then um - hmmm

now I have to convince myself not to go with the good plus money on sabathia

any thoughts people?

last night they woke up and even if barry is back in the lineup I figure he cant be 100% (unless hes loading up on sudafed!!!)

Powerball is up to over 200 million. Rather play that than to touch this game!

Martinez remains confident
It's bad outing, not bad start
By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff | May 6, 2004

CLEVELAND -- The numbers tell one story: Pedro Martinez is off to the slowest start in his seven seasons with the Red Sox.

Martinez tells another story, fully confident that his early inconsistency -- epitomized by the Rangers roughing him up Saturday for six runs in four innings -- is a springboard to better days ahead.

"It was just one bad outing," Martinez said, briefly suspending his ban on public discourse. "I don't feel like I have anything to prove."

Martinez, who will pitch the series finale tonight against Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia, is 3-2 with a 4.17 ERA through six starts as he approaches free agency. He had not lost more than one of his first six decisions or recorded an ERA higher than 3.67 through his first six starts with the Sox before this year.

Opponents have hit .261 against him, the highest average he has allowed in his first six starts with the Sox (the previous high was .211 in 1999). And his strikeout ratio of 7.61 per nine innings is the lowest of his first six starts in any season. The figure has steadily dropped from a high of 13.81 in 2001.

Manager Terry Francona suggested great pitchers can get off to choppy starts, just like great hitters.

"It's not necessarily always perfect," Francona said. "I think he'll continue to get better, which probably means more consistency."

If Martinez should be eager to face any particular team, it would be the Indians. He is 10-1 with a 1.66 ERA in 14 career starts against the Tribe and 5-0, 1.88 in six starts at Jacobs Field. The only time he faced the Indians last year, he pitched seven shutout innings.

Francona expects Martinez to find his stride soon.

"If I could bottle it, I would," the manager said. "Hitters, pitchers, athletes, they're human. And it does happen like that sometimes."

When it does happen, Francona foresees Martinez matching his usual excellence.

"I don't know how many different ways I can say it," Francona said. "I know when it's over he's going to be good. The numbers are going to be right where they need to be."

The Indians were so pumped up about the matchup between Martinez and Sabathia that they published a "tale of the tape" comparison. Sabathia is 1-0 with a 1.61 ERA in four starts this season. Through their first 100 career starts, Martinez, 32, was 46-30 with a 3.38 ERA, while Sabathia, 23, was 44-25 with a 4.00 ERA.

Back to work
Also - I didnt realize Foulke had back spasms... Maybe we wont see him tonight

Closer Keith Foulke said he was ready to pitch last night after a back spasm had sidelined him for three days, and he finished the Sox' 9-5 victory with a scoreless ninth inning. "It gets to a certain point where I need to get back out there," he said. "You start kind of losing it a little bit." . . .

Pedro better show up
By Karen Guregian
Thursday, May 6, 2004

CLEVELAND - From here on out, Pedro Martinez [stats, news]' mound appearances will be like tonight's hugely hyped ``Friends'' series finale: Must-see TV.

While the masses watch Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Joey and Phoebe sign off, Red Sox [stats, schedule] Nation will be tuned into its sulking star.

Want the money, Pedro? Want the security?

Show us the pitching.

That's what it's come down to for the Sox' ace, thanks to some ill-timed and poorly chosen words last week.

Martinez, who tonight will be trying to salvage the club's road trip from hell when he opposes Indians southpaw C.C. Sabathia, is clearly losing the public relations battle. His latest verbal salvo has left fans either angry or apathetic. So it can't get much worse.

At this point, his best and only defense comes back to what he's able to do in the 60 feet, 6 inches between the pitching mound and the plate in his remaining starts from now until October.

Forget about what he's done in the past. Based on the way they're conducting negotiations, it's obvious the Sox have. It's all about the present. The here and now.

Martinez flunked miserably in his first post-rant start, getting shelled by Texas. One clubhouse insider believes Martinez simply tried too hard to back up his words after calling his bosses liars, claiming they were misleading people about the health of his pitching shoulder. He delivered these accusations while informing everyone he was done negotiating until the season ended.

Former Sox hurler Frank Viola, on hand to do the ESPN telecast last night, could certainly relate to that theory. Coming on the heels of a Cy Young Award-winning season with the Twins, Viola cut off talks after spring training, announcing he would test the free agent market. In hindsight, he says it was the worst thing he could have done.

``I picked up my Cy Young with Minnesota at the beginning of '89, and a few days earlier, I came out saying I was going to play out my free agency, similar to what Pedro did,'' Viola said. ``Some people are able to handle it. Some people aren't. In my case, it was the dumbest thing I had ever done because I put all kinds of pressure on myself to verify what I said. Maybe that's going through his mind, too.''

Viola wound up going 13-15 that year. So he didn't prove much of anything after dissing the Twins.

``I came out like an idiot,'' said Viola. ``Minnesota fans didn't want to hear that. No fans want to hear that. So when I went 13-15, it was pretty ugly.''

Over the years, Martinez has been the type to thrive on pressure, especially the negative kind. Only that wasn't the case Saturday when he was lit up for six runs on nine hits.

Viola watched that game, and has kept an eye on Martinez during the past few years. He sees the velocity is down, but that's not as troubling as Pedro's overall demeanor.

``When you have a situation like this, with (Curt) Schilling coming in, with the ballclub like they have, this is your chance to really shine,'' Viola said. ``When Roger (Clemens) and I were together, we pushed each other. You'd like to see some guys going back and forth and having that friendly type of rivalry. To me, Pedro just doesn't look like he has been the last two or three years. He doesn't look comfortable out there. I don't know what the case is. Only he knows for sure. But if anyone's going to put it together, he will.''

At this point, he doesn't have much choice. As former talk show host Arsenio Hall might say, Pedro's got to ``get busy.'' Perhaps it's a good thing Martinez, irked by the negative fallout of his last media session, has once again sworn off speaking to the press. Trouble is, he's one rant too late.

Wheels still spinning

Lost both the cleveland ones but won the mets...

a net loss of -1.11 on the day

brings me down to +0.8 14-19

wow since I was 10-1 I've only won 4 yet lost 19!!!!!

And pedro managed to give up a homer in his first pitch - at that point I thought I was all set...
