The Cincinnati Reds team that lost 93 games and slashed its payroll last year is enjoying an unexpected revival. A 5-2 victory over Florida on Tuesday left the Reds at 27-18, the best record in the National League. The season's small-market surprise is leading the NL Central. Last year, the Reds moved into their new ballpark and were in second place in mid-May, before stalling around .500. Ownership decided in July to scuttle the roster and start over. General manager Jim Bowden and manager Bob Boone were fired, and the roster was dismantled in trades that brought prospects, saved money and soured fans. The payroll was slashed to $43 million sixth-lowest in the majors in the offseason, and the trades continued in spring training. Chris Reitsma, their most versatile pitcher, was shipped to the Braves a week before the season opener for two minor leaguers. Ownership is making no promises. General manager Dan O'Brien says the players will determine what happens in July by how well they do. No team is hotter than the Reds. They've won seven in a row their best run in two years and 10 out of 11. They're 16-7 at Great American Ball Park, the NL's best home record. And they're doing all of it despite a roster that has major shortcomings. The bench is extremely thin and the bullpen is in transition, byproducts of their small payroll and their trading spree. The Reds rank near the bottom of the league in hitting and pitching, and in the bottom half in defense.

Go Figure.
