Gary Sheffield of the New York Yankees has moved into the third outfield starting spot for the American League in balloting results for the 75th All-Star Game, to be played Tuesday, July 13 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, it was announced today.

For the second consecutive season, the outcome of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game will impact postseason play, as the team representing the winning League in this year's Midsummer Classic will have home field advantage in the 2004 World Series.

Sheffield (693,248) is seeking his third election as an All-Star Game starter (1993, 2003) and his eighth appearance overall. If elected, he would be the fifth player since 1970 elected to start at the same position in both Leagues, joining Ken Griffey, Jr., Kenny Lofton, Mark McGwire and Dave Winfield. In his first season with the Yankees, Sheffield is batting .301 with nine home runs and 42 RBI.

Remaining American League position leaders are: Catcher Ivan Rodriguez (959,254) of the Detroit Tigers; First Baseman Jason Giambi (748,011), Shortstop Derek Jeter (797,721) and Third Baseman Alex Rodriguez (1,141,827) of the Yankees; Second Baseman Alfonso Soriano (1,413,944) of the Texas Rangers; and Outfielders Vladimir Guerrero (1,250,459) of the Anaheim Angels and Manny Ramirez (1,152,444) of the Boston Red Sox.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Balloting Program, the largest in professional sports, encompasses Ameriquest In-Stadium Balloting at all 30 Major League ballparks and Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Ameriquest Online All-Star Balloting at MLB.com, the Official Web Site of Major League Baseball; Pepsi Retail Balloting at Wal-Mart stores; and International Retail Balloting throughout Canada, Dominican Republic, Japan, and Puerto Rico, and online in Spanish and Japanese at MLB.com.

While the fan balloting program will determine the eight starting position players in each League, a separate ballot of managers, coaches, and players (the Player Ballot) will be conducted by Major League Baseball during the final week of fan balloting to select an additional eight position players and eight pitchers in each League.

The two All-Star Team managers - Jack McKeon of the Florida Marlins and Joe Torre of the New York Yankees - and Major League Baseball will select seven (four pitchers and three position players) of the eight remaining spots on each team.

Following the conclusion of voting and the announcement of the starters, pitchers and reserves, fans will have the opportunity to select the final position player for each League's 32-man roster at MLB.com. The third annual All-Star Final Vote, sponsored by Ameriquest, recorded a record 10 million votes in the three-day voting period for last year's program.

The 75th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pre-game ceremonies beginning at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). ESPN Radio will provide exclusive, national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage and MLB.com Radio will provide exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.
