Mets reportedly add OF Hidalgo in deal with Astros
June 17, 2004
SportsLine.com staff and wire reports

The New York Mets have acquired outfielder Richard Hidalgo from the Houston Astros for reliever David Weathers, according to a report.

The New York Daily News is reporting that the Mets will also receive $4 million in cash from Houston, which is ridding itself of a contract that calls for Hidalgo to be paid $12 million this season and $15 million in 2005. The paper also reports the Mets are likely to buy out the final year of Hidalgo's contract for $2 million.

Hidalgo hit 44 home runs and drove in 122 for the Astros in 2000, but has not approached those numbers since and has apparently fallen out of favor with Houston manager Jimy Williams. Hidalgo is hitting .256 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 58 games this season.

Weathers, a 14-year veteran joining his ninth team, appeared in 32 games this seaon for the Mets. He is 5-3 with a 4.28 ERA in 33 2/3 innings.

It allows them to play Jason Lane fulltime, and gets rid of a player who would be a problem if not starting. Their bullpen has been suspect this year, and maybe a change of scenery will help Weathers.

IMO;
Hidalgo will be more productive than Jason in the long run.
