6/28/04: FLORIDA (Penny) –123 at ATLANTA (Thomson) +113:
MLB - 7:05PM (EST)

Atlanta’s John Thomson has been struggling mightily lately, having lost his 4 consecutive starts. Thomson had been pitching great at the end of May and beginning of June, but in his last 15.3 innings, he’s allowed 17 runs & 23 hits including 5 homeruns – raising his ERA from 3.79 to 4.91 on the season. At home he has also had trouble going just (1-2) with a 5.23 ERA in 5 starts.

Brad Penny has had his share of up’s & downs as well for the Marlins this year. Penny won his last outing, but lost 3 straight prior to that victory. However, even during Penny’s losing streak, he was not hit nearly as hard as Thomson. Also, Penny has become somewhat of a strikeout pitcher this season (ranked #8 in the NL), which unlike Thomson, gives him the ability to get out of trouble on his own.

Both teams match up well offensively & considering that neither as been playing very well – each winning only 4 of their last 10, give Florida the edge with Penny on the mound as a moderate road favorite on Monday night.

Best of luck,
