Good reading from another site...

Obviously, Sweep Stoppers refers to the team's Won-Loss record when trying to avoid being swept. Sweep Success refers to the team's Won-Loss record when trying to sweep an opponent. Thus far, I only used series that are three or four games in length, so statistics for two-game series are not included. Interleague games are included.

I hope these are helpful to you in your future baseball handicapping.

National League Sweep Stoppers
National League teams have been successful stopping a sweep only 44 of 94 times (a success rate of just 46.8%). That means that there have been 50 sweeps involving NL teams through July 1. Interestingly, teams have been more successful stopping a sweep on the road (28-27) than at home (16-23).

Individual team success at stopping a potential sweep.
Atlanta 3-0
Florida 4-3
Montreal 5-6
NY Mets 3-4
Philadelphia 0-3

Chicago Cubs 4-0
Cincinnati 2-2
Houston 5-3
Milwaukee 2-1
Pittsburgh 2-6 (0-4 L4)
St. Louis 3-2

Arizona 4-7 (0-3 L3)
Colorado 3-5 (0-5 L5)
Los Angeles 2-3
San Diego 1-2
San Francisco 1-3 (0-3 L3)

National League Sweep Success
National League teams trying for a three- or four-game sweep have been successful 42 of 83 times (50.6% of the time). Again, teams are more successful attaining a sweep on the road (20-15) than they are at home (22-26).

Individual team success at attaining a potential sweep.
Atlanta 1-2
Florida 4-1
Montreal 1-1
NY Mets 4-0
Philadelphia 3-2

Chicago Cubs 3-0
Cincinnati 4-2
Houston 2-3
Milwaukee 2-7
Pittsburgh 4-1
St. Louis 5-6

Arizona 0-3
Colorado 0-4
Los Angeles 3-4
San Diego 2-3
San Francisco 4-2 (4-0 L4)

Good Stuff. I was wondering if you might have any idea what it looks like when just considering a home team sweep situation. For example, I was wondering what the numbers might be on home teams playing for a sweep and home teams playing to prevent the sweep.

Thanks

Good to take the big dogs in these situations, when the fav only wins around 50%

I like to fade the home favorite that is going for the 3 game sweep. Some nice prices on the road dog in this situation.

I've found success in taking the home team when they're trying for the sweep and when they're about to get swept.

The Cubs have gone 64-0 without being swept in a 3 or 4 game series. They lost the first 3 at Pitt in May then won the 4th game of the series 12-1. Will the Brew crew break the streak tonight vs Zambrano?
