MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz dropped his appeal and began serving a five-game suspension Sunday.

Ortiz was suspended by the commissioner's office for throwing bats onto the field after he was ejected from a game July 16 at Anaheim. He initially appealed his five-game suspension, but dropped the appeal before Sunday's game against Minnesota.

Ortiz will be eligible to return for Saturday's game at Detroit. He entered Sunday tied for the AL lead with 27 home runs and was second in the league with 93 RBIs.
