NY Mets +1.25 over ST. LOUIS
Mets have been hanging around in this series and with a couple of breaks they could be going for the sweep today. However, it was not meant to be and now they’ll try and salvage a game today. No reason it won’t happen. Al Leiter has been nothing less then spectacular and gives the Mets a better chance of winning then losing every time he toes the slab. All he’s done is compiled an 8-3 record and a 2.12 ERA. Leiter has allowed just 72 hits in 110 frames and the opposition has gone yard on him just nine times all year. The man is the straight goods. Jason Marquis, like most of the Red Bird pitchers, is having a career year. However, in his last start against the Expos he showed signs of fatigue as he was knocked out in the fifth after allowing nine hits and four earned runs. Even more troublesome is that he was pitching with a five run lead and couldn’t hold it. Marquis’s ERA is 1½ runs higher then Leiters and at Busch, his ERA is 4.10. Bottom line here is value and when you get a tag on a pitcher of Leiter’s caliber it must be considered a good gamble. No exception here. Play NY Mets +1.25 (Risking 1.6 units).
Cleveland +1.38 over CHICAGO
It’s been said that baseball is a game of stats and numbers so let me throw a few numbers at you. How about the number two, that’s the number of wins the White Sox have in their past 13 games. How about the number four, that’s the number of runs the White Sox have failed to score in 8 of their past 13 games. How about the number .212, that’s Chicago’s team batting average over their past 13 games. How about the number 8.50, that’s Chicago’s starter, Jose Contreras’ ERA since joining the White Sox. Throw in the fact that the Indians possess the best offense in the majors and that they're red-hot and it makes this one a no-brainer. White Sox are in a serious funk and blowing a two run lead in the ninth yesterday can’t help their current state of mind. Oh yeah, there’s one other number we left out, the number 1.38. That’s the insane price we’ll gladly jump all over in this one. Play Cleveland +1.38 (Risking 1.6 units).
