San Francisco + 1.20 over PHILADELPHIA
Somebody else that doesn’t have the name Schmidt or Bonds is going to have to step up for the Giants and today’s starter, Noah Lowry, has done just that. Lowry has made seven appearances this year with five of those coming as a starter. He’s now the Giants number two man should they get to the post-season and deservedly so. Lowry has allowed just two jacks all year in 37 innings of work. He comes in with a 2.25 road ERA, a 1.16 ERA over his last three appearances, and overall, a very impressive 2.43 ERA. Furthermore, he’s a lefty and that bodes well here as the Phillies are just 14-17 against southpaws and they’re also a team that relies too heavily on the long ball and they’re fading fast. They’ve dropped four of their past five and are now just two games above .500. Eric Milton will toe the slab this afternoon and while his won/loss record is terrific, his effectiveness has been anything but. Milton has just one win in his past seven starts and his ERA on the year is 4.63. Over his last three starts his ERA is 6.23 and to top things off, he’ll be facing a Giants team that has won three in a row and are 22-12 against lefties this year. Play San Francisco +1.20 (Risking 1.6 units).

Kansas City +1.90 over OAKLAND
This choice is all about value and we find plenty of it here. The Royals bashed around Mark Mulder and cashed in last night as a huge pup. Today they’ll face Rich Harden who comes in with an ERA of 3.94. Harden is having a good year but does not warrant this tag, not many pitchers do and Harden is one of them. Most recently, his strikeouts are down and his walks are up and that’s the first sign of a fatigued arm. Harden has already logged more innings in one season then he ever has and as a result, he’s vulnerable. Meanwhile, Brian Anderson has been a totally different pitcher since he teamed up and worked extensively with new pitching coach Mike Mason, who replaced John Cumberland on June 30. Mason was previously a pitching coach with the Cubs and Twins and has worked wonders with many promising pitchers including Johan Santana, Carlos Zambrano and Matt Clement to name a few. Anderson has not allowed a single earned run in his past two starts against both the White Sox and Angels. His confidence level is soaring and it can’t be considered bad strategy to back a guy with odds close to 2-1 that is currently pitching better then he ever has before. Lastly, the A’s have lost three straight, two to the Tigers and one last night and have managed to cross the plate just nine times over that three game span. Big overlay. Play Kansas City +1.90 (Risking 1.6 units).
