Oh, Oh, Ohio State might be in some hot water, ala the University of Minnesota:
NEW YORK AP) – Ohio State star Maurice Clarett received assistance to pass a class before the Fiesta Bowl, a university professor told The New York Times for Sunday’s editions.
The running back passed African-American and African Studies 101 by taking two oral exams, Paulette Pierce, an associate professor, told the newspaper. She said she worked directly with Clarett and administered the exams after he walked out of the course’s midterm exam during the fall semester.
It wasn’t clear whether Clarett received special consideration, or whether university or NCAA rules were broken. Clarett, a freshman standout on the Buckeyes’ national championship team, did not respond to the newspaper’s requests for an interview.
Pierce also said several football players told her that tutors occasionally wrote their papers, but she had no direct proof.
“We are shocked and dismayed by the allegations,” university president Karen Holbrook and athletic director Andy Geiger said in a statement Saturday night. “We have a rigorous system of checks and balances in place to prevent the kind of misconduct that is charged.”
Holbrook and Geiger called a news conference for Sunday to answer questions about the allegations.
NCAA spokesman Jeff Howard declined comment Saturday.
Kenneth Goings, chairman of the Department of African-American and African studies, told the newspaper that Pierce had the discretion to decide whether to give oral exams.
Despite numerous injuries, Clarett set Ohio State freshman records with 1,237 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns last season as the Buckeyes beat Miami 31-24 in double-overtime for the national title.

Okay, as you can imagine, I am watching this situation very closely. The fact is the story was brought forward by the NY Times and we all know how credible they are. The source for this story was a troubled TA with a history of mental problems and she violated the University's strict code of conduct regarding a student's privacy in academic affairs.

With that being said, Clarett was allowed to take an oral exam in an African-American Studies Class instead of a written Mid-Term and Final. It was the Professor's decision to do so (without pressure from the Athletic Dept.) and that is her right provided she provides the same opportunities for other students. I read her course syllabus and it states very clearly that she will make special provisions for ANY student struggling in the class provided that they show a willingness to learn the material. I watched the press conference today, and AD Andy Geiger made it abundantly clear that they have found no wrongdoing and that both Clarett and Vance were eligible to play in the Fiesta Bowl. He also said that is determined by the Registrar's Office and NOT the Athletic Dept.

The allegations of tutors completing homework assignments for student-athletes was bogus. In Chris Vance's case, he failed the class anyway but was still eligible to play in the Fiesta Bowl according to NCAA rules. The TA had no PROOF or EVIDENCE whatsoever that work was being done for the players by tutors but I'm sure it made for a better story. It sounds like the NY Times has decided to try and bring down the #1 CFB program in the land. Its interesting that the US News & World Report recently investigated the OSU football program and found NOTHING.

What bothers me is why was Clarett allowed to walk out of a Mid-Term Exam without repercussions from Coach Tressel??? As much as he stresses academics, he should have been aware of this situation before it became an issue. Nonetheless, they are lightyears from proving widespread academic fraud on behalf of the whole Ohio State Athletic Dept.

Ohio State has an excellent reputation for policing itself and I'm sure Andy Geiger and Coach Tressel will handle the situation with the utmost integrity that is synonymous with THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY.

Concerning the investigation into Clarett's financial affairs, I'm sure it stems from his frienship with LeBron James. Assuming LeBron gave him gifts, you're going to have a hard time convincing anyone that he is an Ohio State Booster. The kid has never been associated with the University and didn't even take an official visit there during High School. He's 2 months removed from HS for God's sake!!! I think it is quite a stretch to call him an Ohio State Booster.

So what's the big deal, if they cheated? This country is great! You can do anything you want until you get caught.I believe all schools should do the same.Pass all atheletes even if they don't show up for class.The atheletes got be prepared for competition.They only get a slim shot to make it to the pro's so the schools have to help the kids get that level.

Cheating is perfectly fine. Hey what the hell most non-atheletes have the results to a exam before it is given.

Lay the points and cash.

If Tennessee can get away with it year after year, this should be a piece of cake for OSU.

KMAN;

One of the individuals quoted in the NY Times article was a member of the infamous Drake Commission that spent so much energy going after Tennessee following their NC in '98.

Their agenda is the elimination of all scholarship athletics at colleges and universities and also stopping the "exploitation" of the black athlete.

Sounds like they have decided to leave Tennessee alone (they were cleared of all charges) and move on to Ohio State.

Darklord- Yes the flag was a joke but let's not forget Miami let that stiff Krenzel complete a 4th and 16 to keep the game going and set up that phantom pass interference call so the Hurricanes have only themselves to blame.

As far as the allegations against the Buckeyes, the NCAA can go after anyone they want to because they don't have to answer to anyone. All the schools cheat. It's just a matter of how deep the NCAA wants to dig to catch them. The professors let the players slide through courses. The kids have phantom jobs and sell their game tickets to boosters. That and other stuff still goes on.

It's pretty widely known that Maurice Clarett isn't taking any advanced chemistry courses. This guy's so dumb he couldn't finish spelling cat if you gave him the "c" and the "t" but colleges don't recruit guys like him for their academics.

SOCCERFAG & DORKLORD;

Before you two losers finish jackin' each other off, there is one thing you forgot to mention:

Clarett graduated early from HS with a 3.5 GPA and a 1220 on the SAT.

I doubt that either one of you idiots could spell SAT let alone score a 1220 on it.

>>They had to have a late oops flag to win their "National Championship."<<

Why don't you check this article out Einstein (assuming you know how to read).

http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/6483719

I was at the game....Gamble got mugged. The Buckeyes rule CFB so get used to it!!!

By the way, I don't care what you do for a living jerkoff. Its not relevant here. Why don't you talk about those CFB powerhouses from Montana instead of flaming the National Champion Ohio State Buckeyes???

"...And now the party begins for the Ohio State Buckeyes. They are 14-0....And they are the National Champions of College Football."
