MICHIGAN FOOTBALL WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2003:

Since the National Championship in 1997 Michigan has looked to the defense year in and year out to lead there team. Why wouldn't they? It has been there stronghold as it was for OSU last season as they took home the SEARS trophy going a perfect 14-0. WATCH THE WOLVES MAKE A RUN AT RUNNING THE TABLE THIS YEAR.

THE OFFENSE:
This season things have changed for the WOLVES. Not only do they bring in a new field surface, same as at Ford Field more about this later, but there strength will fall onto the offense. BIG BLUE returns a experienced O-LNE, lead by two big teners and top pro-prospect Tony Pape. RB Chris Perry, CP ran for over 1,100 yards last season and 14 touches. He has the speed and power to make defenses quiver. Wideout Braylon Edwards, The fastest man on the track team is the BIG play threat the Wolves need to stretch the field. Braylon will also be given the honor of wearing #1 this year following in the footsteps of former wr's Anthony Carter, Amoni Toomer, C.Calloway, D. Terrell. The other WR's are young but O-so talented. And at QB we have our favorite wiping buy John Navare, if experience is what you want John is the man. 4 years he has started the opener, 3 years he has started throughout. Last year John found himself throwing for 20 plus TD's and 7int's only. He is the KEY and he is ready to lead!
FB and TE will be positions of need, but with the Michigan system there the easiest to fill. With all of this the Offense will be also given a new surface to excel on, late in the season the old natural surface would FALL apart year in and year out. Michigan will now be able to rely on there speed at home LATE IN THE SEASON on this new field surface.

THE DEFENSE:
For the first time in a long time the defense is being overshadowed by the Offense. This suits the Wolves defenders just FINE! They want to earn the headlines as the class of 97' did instead of living up to someone elses expectations.
This defense is young, but it is FAST. So fast that the line seperating MICHIGAN form the SEC power schools has finally been matched by this POWER. Marlon Jackson has been moved to safety, a new position for him, due to senior graduation. This move alone has put the Wolves in a great spot were they can feature there 11 best defenders at on time. On defense the lb's feature Carl Diggs & Zack Kaufman, ala speilman in maize and blue. The one I will be watching will either be playing outside lb or d-end he goes by the name of LAMARR WOODLEY and he my friends CAN play. He is from up the road at Saginw high and was the TOP defensive recruit in the nation last year. If there was a ratings for the last five he may very well TOP that list as well.. Woodley stands 6'3 and weighs 265 and he's a SPEED rusher with a attitude...Put him at one end and the 6'5 268lbs 4.4 40 runner Kashama at the other and the WOLVES will surely improve on there league leading 42 sacks of a year ago.. These two should be fun to watch to say the least!

My insight on this defense is this, they have great cover corners, SOLID lb. A experienced tough D-line, THEY'LL dominate and ultimately lead this team by game 8.. (THERE SPEED IS THERE ADVANTAGE ON THE OUTSIDE!)

(SWARM AND TACKLE WELL IS WHAT THIS GROUP HAS BEEN TAUGHT.. WITH THERE SPEED AND TALENT AND THIS PHILOSPHY THEY WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST UNITS IN THE COUNTRY.)

KICKING:
UGHHHHHHHHHHHH! MISS-IGAN, errrrr I mean MICHIGAN ranked 11th last year in fg % last season in the BIG TEN and 8th in extrapoint accuracy. With that we have a freshman from FLORIDA named RIVAS. Rivas has been the star in the pre-season. Carr says, "When the ball comes off his foot it exlpodes - there's no hesitation in him. He is one of those guys that possesses the kind of poise and confidence that you need in a position like kicker."

THAK GOD, we need it! Punting is in great hands with Finley, but we'll need the freshman to step-up BIG!

THE SCHEDULE:
No PSU, Wisky.. Notre Dame at home as well as OSU. CMU, Houston as a warm up before ND and a trip to OREGON... If we get by OU and into the BIG TEN 4-0 watch-out! I see this team running the table.. Talent and experience to go along with OSU at home after 2 straight loses means BIG BLUE IN 2003 making a charge not only at the Championship Series BUT the SUGAR as well!!

GO BIG BLUE!!!!

I see a BIG landmine playing at Minny.

Mason has pulled off some big upsets since taking over that program and he has perhaps his best team ever this year.

Then of course there is the END OF YEAR showdown with the Buckeyes.

THE FIELDTURF:

It was squishy. It was hot. It was bright green.
It was MICHIGAN STADIUM'S new $620,000 Fieldturf surface that was recently installed in place of natural grass, which never prospered in the SUNKEN stadium.
Other then the heat-retaing nature of the surface-which has rubber pellets-WR Calvin Bell said he is pleased with the fieldturf.

"In the route running, the cutting and everything the surface is really nice." said Bell, who has practiced with his teammates in the stadium for the last week. "there is no more slipping or anything and that is fine by us."

Offensive lineman Courtney Morgan said the new surface will be most valuable late in the season.

"I think we'll appreciate it in November, instead of playing on chopped up grass." Morgan said. "You could see how are RB's / WR's could have problems later in the season on the old surface."

NEW TURF = FASTER WOLVES....

Cincy, the BIG TEN is filled with landmines.. there will always be the nailbitters as you can attest for with last years 14-0 bucks.. They could have VERY easily lost 4 games on there way to perfection...

LUCK IS ALWAYS A FACTOR IN RUNNING THE TABLE.. ALL I KNOW IS THIS TEAM ATLEAST HAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE AT GOING ALL THE WAY...

Beano Cook has Michigan playing in the Sugar Bowl. People might laugh but last preseason he predicted that Ohio State would be in the Fiesta Bowl.

Kodiak7 - As a Michigan fan, I hope you are right. Living in Memphis I get so sick of hearing about the SEC. The local radio stations no nothing outside of SEC, and Conference USA sports. I doubt they could even tell you who won the World Series last year.

I take that back, they do know about the Big 10 because they are always trying to compare themselves to the Big 10. They claim the SEC is the most superior conference that was ever assembled yet they are always comparing the conference with the Big 10?????

KMAN its conference envy.. THE BIG TEN is the greatest all around conference in the land year in and year out...

I played in the BIG 8 / 12, then transfered to a BIG WEST school which then became a WAC affiliate, (my school moved to the wac). And I can tell you first hand the BIG 10 is were its at!

MICHIGAN SCHEDULE:

A30 CMU
S06 HOUSTON
S13 NOTRE DAME
S20 at oregon
S27 INDIANA
O04 at iowa
O11 at minnesota
O18 ILLINOIS
O25 PURDUE
N01 at msu
N15 at nortwestern
N22 OHIO ST.

strength of schedule:
conference 9
nation 52

games to look at:
notre dame / @oregon / @minnesota / purdue / @msu / osu...

THE BOTTOM LINE:
osu is the sensible preseason pick to win the BIG 10, but no one should be surprised to see MICHIGAN end up on top, either. They return every significant player on offense and has a DEEP pool of talent on defense. Any areas found wanting will be fortified by the conferences #1 recruiting class. Also working in MICHIGANS favor is the leagues rotating schedule. Instead of PSU/WISKY we have Indi/NW..

MICHIGAN HAS OWNED BOTH PSU/WISKY however the last 6 years...

As an Arkansas fan, I can say that the Big 10 is a tough conference. Arkansas thought they had a cupcake bowl last year when they played Minny. After scoring on the first drive, the Hogs folder like a cheap lawn chair, and Minny took over the game. (does anyone know if Minnesota's QB is back this year?) The guy was impressive in the MCB.
Thanks for the write up Kodiak. Good info is always appreciated.

yes he is back and there offense is loaded..

his name is Asad Abdul-Khaliq and if he stays healthy the golphers will make noise this season...

Minnesota's only offensive holes are at both tackle positions were both starters graduated. The have the best scrambling QB in the BIG 10, a saginaw, michigan native a rb. (jackson) and the best TE in the conference in Utecht.. The player to watch for the golphers is soph. rb Marion Barber, this kid avg 6.3 per carry before a hammy forced him out.. SCARY these Golphers are, alot like Iowa last season.. Lets just hope there young defense stays as bad as it was last season against the BIG 10's first tier..

GOOD LUCK ON THE SEASON DAN TANNA

Ahhhh, yes. Abdul-Khaliq. I heard his name in my sleep at the MCB last year. That kid's got alot of game.
Thanks for the info. I'm going to keep a close eye on them this year. Playing in a conference with so many powerhouse teams, they may not get the respect from Vegas and the oddsmakers. Could find some value on them.

Good luck to you too K7

The one tm I hate to see my Goofers play is the Hogs, as AR is one of my favorite places. Have friends Fayetteville. My best friend taught @UA. Yes we will be very good on the O side of the ball. Besides Jackson & Barber, Tapeh is finally healthy and will be @ FB. Also a BIG WR (6`5") named Hosack, good possession type. Have a JUCO burner @WR named Hamilton if he can get healthy. Good news bad news on D tho, return 9 starters, but they gave up an average of 42 pts last 4 reg. gms. After 7 yrs still ambivalent re. Mason, he wins the ones he shouldn`t and loses to patsies. Dan do you ever go to Oaklawn? LOL

I've always been a big fan of Glen Mason. If Tressel wouldn't have gotten the Ohio State job, then Mason should have been the man. He has done a nice job with that program but is limited until he gets out of that god-awful Metrodome and into an on-campus facility.

I also like Mason. Meet him at Kansas in the early 90's. Good guy, Great coach. Still can't believe they went with Tressel over Gleen..

My blatant bias aside, great post kodiak. I'm worried about Oregon. Non-conference on the road hasn't been kind to UM in recent years (ND, UCLA, Wahington, ND again).

My blatant Anti-Michigan bias hopefully will not show but I think Michigan may have their hands full with the Spartans (no not a fan of MSU). Outside of last year, it seems MSU has played them tough the past few years.

I am a WMU grad and do not expect much from the Broncs this year. CMU looks like the best MAC team in the state.

However a ND fan and hope to see some of the people on this board at the ND-Michigan game in Sept.
