Dean Defends Bin Laden

Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean spoke up on behalf of 9/11 terror mastermind Osama bin Laden on Friday, saying U.S. leaders shouldn't prejudge him before he's tried and convicted in a court of law.

Asked if he thought bin Laden deserved the death penalty, Dean told the Concord Monitor, "I've resisted pronouncing a sentence before guilt is found.

"I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best not to, in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials," he explained.

"I do think if you're running for president, or if you are president, it's best to say that the full range of penalties should be available," the Vermont Democrat added. "But it's not so great to prejudge the judicial system."

Earlier in the month, Dean sounded a whole lot less forgiving of President Bush, reminding a Washington, D.C., radio host that some believe he may have been complicit in the 9/11 attacks.

"The most interesting theory that I've heard so far – which is nothing more than a theory, it can't be proved – is that he was warned ahead of time by the Saudis," the leading Democrat explained.

NewsMax Report Prompts Dean-Bin Laden Retraction

Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean was forced to retract comments yesterday where he warned against prejudging the guilt of 9/11 terror mastermind Osama bin Laden, prompted by NewsMax.com's coverage of the story.

"As an American, I want to make sure he gets the death penalty he deserves," Dean hastily told the Associated Press, hours after NewsMax called attention to his bizarre comments to the Concord Monitor, which posted its interview with the leading Democrat earlier in the day.

In remarks that went unnoticed till late Friday, Dean had told the New Hampshire paper, "I still have this old-fashioned notion that even with people like Osama, who is very likely to be found guilty, we should do our best not to, in positions of executive power, not to prejudge jury trials."

The news was further obscured by Monitor editors, whose headline - "Dean's secure in his view of Saddam" - gave no clue of the bombshell quote obtained by their reporter Lisa Wangness.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, NewsMax launched its own report under the headline, "Dean Defends bin Laden" - the first publicly available report highlighting the leading Democrat's astonishing blooper.

"It took the former Vermont governor a few hours after the story got picked up on the Internet and on wire services" for Dean to react, the New York Daily News acknowledged in Saturday editions.

By Friday night, Dean's tune had changed 180 degrees, saying of bin Laden, "I share in the outrage of all Americans . . . I just think this guy is outrageous.

Kerry, Gephardt Blast Dean Over Bin Laden Blunder

Presidential hopeful Howard Dean's Democratic rivals wasted no time on Saturday blasting him for suggesting the day before that terror mastermind Osama bin Laden might not be guilty of the 9/11 attacks after all.

The harshest attack came from Sen. John Kerry, whose campaign stands to gain the most from the outrageous Dean gaffe.

"What kind of muddled thinking is it if you can't instantly say that in your heart you know that bin Laden is guilty?" he asked, in a speech to a Manchester, New Hampshire crowd.

Then, referring to the potentially fatal political damage Dean likely incurred with his comments, the Massachusetts Democrat added, " Someone who talks like this is going to have a hard time convincing the American people that he can keep them safe. . . This election is too vital for us to lose it if voters refuse to take a gamble on national security and the steadiness of our leadership."

Noting that Dean's remarks would yield a political bonanza for the GOP, Kerry said, "You don't have to listen too carefully to hear the sound of champagne corks popping in Karl Rove's office."

Presidential hopeful Dick Gephardt also pounced on Dean's comments, telling the Los Angeles Times in a telephone interview yesterday, "I don't see how we can beat George Bush with statements like that - it won't make sense to the American people."

Gephardt said that the effort by the Democratic front-runner to retract his statement later in the day wouldn't work. "When you're in a debate with the president of the United States, there are no do-overs," he said.

KMAN, Republicans are thrilled. Karl Rove thinks he's dreaming. R's are just afraid to say that too much lest they wake up the sleeping dems, so publicly they will say he's formidable blah blah blah. Privately they are cumming all over themsleves knowing they can also sweep the South with him on top of the ticket. The question is whether Dems in general will wake up to this fact before they nominate Dean. If they do, they will coalesce behind someone who can challenge Bush on national security, who can lift the Dems in the South and who has solid financial backing -- that person is Wesley Clark. I'm an optomist (how can I ot be, I'm a Cubs fan!) so I think Dems will end up doing the right thing. Time will tell if the Dems get Gored once again.
