They balance them so that the average scores fall around 510, I believe. But we are talking average of every stupid high school kid in the country.

For the sake of examples, an Ivy league school is going to pull in avg scores of around 1400, and your avg state school will pull in around 1100.

Thanks guys. I spent the extra to get all of the results. I think the math is good, but the verbal is not. I have zero knowledge in this area. He is applying and getting scholarship help on his own. Probably does not help having me as a dad, but can't trade me. Any suggestions would be more than welcome...OF

Again..Thanks

OF: if he's into video games, there are a number of SAT software you can buy which make studying all those words a bit more fun. I had some, and it was worth the investment, it had practice tests I could run and critique my results.

On the other hand, i'm just the kind of dork who likes taking standardized tests, so maybe thats not for everybody.

If he was a junior then his math is above average and slightly above average if he was a senior. His verbal score is average either year. This score would get him into most state schools and above average private schools if he has good extracurricular participation. You should also expect 40-80 points of total improvement from Junior to Senior year SAT scores.

Both math and verbal are scaled scores from 200-800 and are adjusted for difficulty so that inter-year comparisons can be made. Everyone gets at least 400 for signing their name. Generally there are 30-50 perfect scores (1600) a year.

You guys are the best, really appreciate the feedbacks. Have 10 months worth of chores, no sports excuses. Was his first test, he is a JR. He is a total gamer. Lives on PC's, interactive gaming. If you have some titles FSB, I will get them. Felt bad about the secret pond. But have to protect business. Back to home depot...Best wishes...OF

Greenie, have to get these house improvements done asap to open up future calender. All my fishing stuff is in storage, $185 month for over a year. I wrap that this month is possible.

Your son pretty much matched Tom Cruises' scores in Risky Business.

Princeton Interviewer "I see you scored 1200 on the SAT"

Cruise "I plan to retake those".

Princeton Interviewer "Joel, you've done so nice work here. VP of the Spanish Club. Three years letterman. Future Enterprises Officer. But it's just not Princeton material, is it?

Cruise "What the f***. Looks like U of Ill for me!"

IVY league? Shit, that's way out of my league. Just hoping for a couple of years of CA state whoever, then maybe Berkeley, UC Davis, or Stanford if all goes well. Keep him close to nest. But in the meantime, he will not plan to retake, he will study, play the test drill games, and retake until he gets a can't turn down score. Yes, that was the ultimate rich white teen fantasy movie. Rebecca Demornay never looked better. I indentified more with the pimp...Best wishes Fezzik...OF

A note about retaking the SATs... most universities take the average of all your SAT results. Ergo, you quickly achieve diminishing returns.

2 better strategies, if he wants scholarships/better schools. 1. Work on his GPA. 3.0 is a "key number" much as it is in the NFL. 2. Get a nice extracurricular list. If he's an officer of a club, and a varsity letterman in some sport (in some sports, this just means going to practice everyday, which is time consuming), his "package" will get a lot more respect from admissions offices.

Now, if he has a full 2 years to go, and you are in a major metro area, here's a secret to getting scholarships. Have him study fencing. A person with minimal coordination who is in decent shape can become a good fencer in a year, IF you spend money for teaching. Think of it as a 2k investment that will save you 40k in tuition. I should add that he needs a 3.0 and a 1250 SAT. If he fences seriously for a couple years, many quality schools that are otherwise unattainable will look at him (Military academies, Notre Dame, even Duke if GPA/SAT are higher... to name a few from my experience).

If you can't do Ivy League, not sure how you're gonna pull Stanford. Tuition @ Stanford is $27,000. Then you still have to pay room & board, fees, etc.

Actually, this info is from 2002-03. So current tuition is probably closer to $29,000.

Tuition + Room (2002-2003)
Instate: $27,204
Out-of-State: $27,204
Room & Board: $8,680

More like a B. FYI, there are lots of counties and districts that AVERAGE about 1150. Then again, there are lots of poor districts that average in the 900's.

Anyway, it is tough to say. The SATs were re-centered around 1993 or 1994. As a result, almost all the scores went up.

Here is an article from August 2003, the national average was 1026.

SAT scores

Also, info from the Dept of State. Fairfax County (suburb of DC) averaged 1110.

What would my result be if I took the SAT, 22 years later (graduated HS in 1982 ). I'd like to know ! I'll spot my wife 100 points !, wife older !

Is this do-able ? I never took it back in 1982.

I think I may be at a dis-advantage, vs. a high-school recent grad, but may be interesting !

I'd be game for this ! Me , against my wife, against 2004 Step-daughter graduate (barely ). I'm the chalk !

Might do this one !

Frog: you inspired me, might have to send you a package this time !

Good Luck.
