St Helens players Martin Gleeson and Sean Long have been banned for four and three months respectively after both men admitted placing bets on their team to lose a Super League match.

They were also fined $A20,000 each and ordered to pay costs of $6,000 following the incident which arose from the match against Bradford on April 13.

A Super League hearing was told that Gleeson opened an account with an offshore bookmaker the day before the match and later bet $2,600 to win $2,400 on Bradford beating Saints by more than eight points.

Long opened his account later the same day and placed a bet of $1,600 and 20 minutes later staked a further $1,000.

Both players admitted their guilt but claimed they were unaware of a Rugby Football League (RFL) by-law prohibiting betting on matches in which their club was involved.

The rulings were made by a panel comprising Judge Peter Charlesworth, Deryck Fox and David Poulter.

"We regard the case of Martin Gleeson as the more serious because he played in the game and was in a position to affect the outcome directly," a statement said.

"The adverse publicity for the RFL and the sport when these bets were exposed has been immense.

"It brings into question the integrity of the game and the perception of the sport by the general public, let alone the supporters of the team who were entitled to expect their players to seek only the success of their side and not to obtain a personal profit by losing."

Long's suspension will expire on September 17, allowing him to return to action for Saints in the Super League play-offs and Great Britain in the Tri-Nations series.

Gleeson's ban will end a day after the grand final on October 17.

What the h***?

How does this guy not get a lifetime barring and jail time for throwing a game he played in?

Because there is no cheating in sports. Just ask. It can't be done. We just think that when we lose.
