For my money Marv Albert or Brent Mussberger are the two best probably because I have listened to them call more big NBA games than anyoe else...

IMO though Al Michaels has done a pretty good job in his first year doing the Finals...and even Doc Rivers is good (Rivers voice isn`t the greatest but what he says is entertaining)

Any chance Doc could come with Al to replace John on MNF?

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

Brent sucks....I had to listen to him on the Radio the other night during the game and all he could do was praise the Lakers..got old quick...since the pistons ended up winning by 20 or so...

You are right, Doc's voice isn't the greatest but very pertanant insight. for example he loved Sheed's passion. Give me players with passion anyday. i know Sheeds a live wire but he does play with passion like most of the Pistons. Outside of Shaq, LA's players are lost. No excuse for Shaq not getting 40 shots if I am their coach.

at first i thought he was awful, but now has a much better working knowledge of the game. he got better as the season progressed, and gives the games in the finals that 'big time' feel that he gives to monday night football.

Al's not bad at all. I like his call of a game better than whoever the guy is that says" "From Downtown" on every 3 point shot made. That gets old.

Al is great on MNF and ok in hoops.... at least it's not Bill Walton doing the games.

I'd rather listen to local radio here in Detroit with George Blaha.

Lol, that would be Kevin Harlan, his call does get a bit annoying..

Bill Walton is so pompous that he actually makes me laugh...its like "what or who will Bill rag on tonight" ?

I still like Brent and Marv...but Al is big time...I like Doc too, he just always sounds like he`s losing his voice

I like Al. Very professional and great overall sports knowledge. Is like Bob Costas in that they can both do a great job in several sports. Brent Musburger is one of my all time favorites as well. He does the games on the radio. Was listening to game 3 Sunday while in the car and he is still one of the best.
As Max said in the thread it did seem Brent was Laker biased a bit, but Detroit kept kicking their tail so there was plenty of Detroit highlights for him to get excited about. Seemed he didn't want to show his emotion as much on Detroit buckets though.

Marv says the phrase, "and he's dribbling down the sideline and there's a pass to Kobe outside the 3 point line, and he shoots and """""YES"""""!!!!!!!

Drives me nuts....

Other than that, he's OK.

I must be watching a different Al Michaels than the rest of y'all.

He is TERRIBLE. Uninteresting, uninspiring, adds little to nothing to the game.

He has a pleasant (and comfortably familiar) enough voice, but he really adds nothing to my experience as far as deep basketball knowledge is concerned. To be fair, I haven't been watching too much of the Finals, but what I've seen has not been terribly attention-grabbing.

I far prefer the NBA on NBA Sunday afternoon team. What the hell are Michaels' credentials for calling the NBA anyway...and the Finals, no less...and the Finals featuring the Lakers' dream team no less than that!

I don't watch football, but I assume he must be a helluva talent if he's corralled MNF all these years. I assume he has great football knowledge, where does he get off calling hoops?

Two moments from these playoffs are a microcosm of how piss-poor his game-calling has been:

1) Derek Fisher's unbelievable shot with 0.4 to beat the shot. Michaels' call didn't give you nearly enough of a sense of the magnitude of that shot.

Great plays and great calls go hand in hand. Who can forget "I don't believe, what I just saw!" (Kirk Gibson, '88) or "The Giants Win the Pennant!" The calls are as memorable as the improbable plays they describe. But when a call sucks, it dilutes the grandeur of the achievement. Derek Jeter's play on Jeremy Giambi a couple years back (when he didn't slide) and Derek Fisher's shot in these playoffs are two of the most astounding plays in important games in recent memory. And the calls on both were awful.

2) This was really a joke...game 4 the other night, shortly after Kobe was called for the tech and the Pistons were shooting, ABC replayed the clip of Kobe actually getting called for the tech (they hadn't shown it live). Now, I as a fan could tell that the video was a replay for several reasons..number one, it was in semi-slo-mo (you know, when it looks like film, not video), and number two, the Pistons were in the middle of free throws! But there's Al Michaels, voice raised, excitement at a fevered pitch...you remember this?:

"And Kobe Bryant has just been called for ANOTH..."

...before he caught himself, realized that he was watching a VIDEO of the tech that was called a minute earlier, and came back to earth.

How absolutely idiotic is that? Again, it was apparent to me as a viewer that the video of was a re-play, not a live shot. But okay, I'd understand if someone watching TV next to me on the couch, and only half paying attention, if they mistakenly thought that Kobe was getting a second foul. But how the hell does Al Michaels, who's at the game LIVE, make that mistake? HELLO -- you're sitting at courtside, don't you see that what's on the monitor is NOT LIVE? How can anyone make such an idiotic error for even an instant? And how is he calling the play-by-play, from the big sweaty bodies playing ball 3 feet in front of his face, or from a little monitor on his desk?

Very, very odd.

I found that very odd too....Its not like in football where the announcer is sitting way upstairs either...If you also noticed Doc Rivers tried to bail him out...overall Michaels covered it up pretty good, he sortive admitted to being caught up in the moment lol...What`s funny he was right at courtside and was somehow thrown off by the replay...I still like him but you made a good point.

Feel a certain kinship to Al. He gambles on the games and so do I. Been on a Total on a boring insignificant Monday night game and by his comments he's sweating as bad as me. In the NBA playoffs, in a game between Dallas and Sacramento you know he's on the OVER by his pregame comments. With 11 minutes to go in the first Qtr (Yes, only one minute has gone by) and the score 2-0 Dallas, Al comments give me a chuckle, for its what I'm yelling at the TV,"Can't anybody score this game is supposed to be a shootout." I get a kick out of trying to figure out who he has his money on.

He didn't really admit. He kind of glossed over it.

I was hoping he'd be a man about it, admit he made a mistake, was watching the monitor, maybe chuckle about it.

He didn't.

Sad.

I saw it and he admitted he was watching the replay........

Of course he didn't make a big deal about it, he wanted it to go away......

I like how he always has the call of the spot on MNF 1 yard off. Always!

I also enjoy how he pronounces words like HUUUUUGE , and New Orleeans.

He does like to mention the spread a lot though and that is hilarious.
