Mayo Sends Armstrong Warning with Dauphine Libere Win

Spain's Iban Mayo won the eight-day Dauphine Libere cycle race on Sunday, asserting himself as one of Lance Armstrong's main rivals next month in the Tour de France.

The Basque rider, leader of the Euskaltel team, beat another Tour de France favorite, American Tyler Hamilton, by 36 seconds while Spain's Oscar Sevilla was third, 1:03 adrift.

Armstrong, who had won the event the past two years, finished in fourth place, two minutes behind Mayo.

The race was in reality decided on Thursday in a 21.6-km individual time trial at the Mont Ventoux in which the five times Tour de France winner was unable to match Mayo's pace.

"It was an interesting week," Armstrong said.

"I was not as super as I would have wished. It was a tough week too, with super riders like Mayo or Tyler Hamilton.

"I still must improve. But I had no crash, no problem, overall that's good," he added.

Armstrong, who will be bidding for a record sixth Tour de France victory next month, crashed last year when he beat Mayo into second place.

DIFFERENT RACE

His preparations this year have been hampered by stomach problems.

"There will be no more races (before the Tour). The Tour is in three weeks, I'm going to train, to focus on my health, maybe lose a little kilo," he said.

Mayo refused to draw conclusions from his victory as regards the Tour.
"I love this race. I won a stage last year and this year. It's a great win but my best victory is still my stage win at l'Alpe d'Huez on the Tour last year.

"The Tour is a different race, with different riders and different ambitions," said Mayo, who finished sixth in last year's Tour.

The last 200-km mountain stage around Grenoble was won by Australian Stuart O'Grady, who broke away with France's Sandy Casar and five other riders almost from the start.

O'Grady, who also won the fifth stage, finished on his own in Grenoble with Casar a few seconds behind.

"It's a great week for me and I thank the whole Cofidis team," said the Australian, who will be one of the favorites for the points classification green jersey on the Tour.

The main bunch, with all the favorites, had decided to take it easy on a sunny Sunday in the Alps and let the breakaways have their day.

Are there any books out there with odds on Lance to win the race, or odds on him not winning the Tour?

I guess only old age will slow Armstrong down. This man is some kind of athlete.

Odd, Pinnacle had those odds up last I checked, they're gone now.

General, when they added in the Sheryl Crow factor they realized an adjustment of odds neede to be made. I really wish he would make history but trust me he will not repeat.

Well it looks like I will be risking a repeat of last year. I was on beloki who may well have won the Tour but for crashing off in the mountains.

The mug punter will be on Armstrong and that is not the place for the sharps to be.

I just seen Pinnacle has odds up for our man Lance Armstrong to win his 6th Tour De France(-125). They have odds up for Mountain Jersey, specials, head-to-head, margin of victory, and Tour winner. Daily odds as well I believe.

Let's hope Sheryl Crow left a little something in him to compete this year.

Lance reminds me of MJ. He is a supreme athlete with a supreme will to win. His age will catch up with him but after MJ cost me more than any athlete in my history I will pass on betting against him, even though I think there is value on some of his opponents.

The ninth stage of the 2004 Tour de France got underway Tuesday with Germany's Jan Ullirch hoping to tackle American rival Lance Armstrong's lead when the race moves into more mountains conditions.

Young Frenchman Thomas Voeckler began the stage in the yellow jersey of the race leader, with five-time champion Lance Armstrong in sixth place, 9:35 minutes behind.

Going for an unprecedented sixth Tour victory, the 32-year-old Armstrong has small leads over his most dangerous rivals, fellow American Tyler Hamilton and Ullrich.

Ullrich trails Armstrong by 55 seconds But said one of Ullrich's assistants that after the mountains Ullrich might be able to build a lead of minutes.

The ninth stage also began with a reduced field after two riders were barred because of doping.

Italian Stefano Casagranda and Martin Hvastija of Slovenia were kicked out of the race on Monday because they are both under formal investigation in Italy for the use of banned substances.

The remaining 174 riders will tackle the shortest course of this year's Tour outside of time trials, 160.5 km from St. Leonard de Noblat to Gueret in the centre of the country.

Following Monday's rest day, the stage is a transition between the first week's flat courses and the upcoming mountain stages, as it traverses undulating, hilly terrain but presents only two modest climbs.
