MACOMB - A man who told police he had lost money gambling and drinking was charged with driving of a street sweeper under the influence on the streets of Macomb early Friday.

Brian Tardi, 21, of Glenview was charged with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol at about 5 a.m. Friday.

Macomb police said they were called to the 1300 block of Parkview Drive about a report of someone running through yards and driving construction equipment.

When police arrived, they found Tardi walking without a shirt on and carrying a shattered cellular telephone in his hand.

Tardi told police he was walking home after a night of drinking and gambling with friends. His local address was not available.

According to police reports, Tardi later admitted he had taken a street sweeper, but police didn't know Friday exactly where it had been stolen from.

Tardi said he drove the street sweeper it until it quit running. Police determined it ran out of gas.

Reports said the key had been left in the street sweeper, which is owned by Hillyer Construction of Macomb. The nearest construction area to Parkview Drive is several blocks away.

Tardi was released from the McDonough County Jail on Friday afternoon on $1,000 bond.
