A Tallahassee bartender charged with felony bookmaking in the gambling investigation of former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson was placed on probation Friday when he pleaded no contest to four misdemeanor gambling charges.

Dereck Delach, 24, will be on probation for two years, pay $452 in court costs and attend 10 sessions of Gamblers Anonymous. He was also ordered to serve 30 days in Leon County's jail work camp _ picking up trash all day in prison garb, but sleeping at home. Judge Kathleen Dekker presided in the case.

The charges resulted from a three-month investigation by the university, Tallahassee police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The investigation included testimony from witnesses who said they were present when McPherson placed bets and a former team equipment manager was often the contact with Delach, who then placed bets on the Internet for McPherson.

Delach had eight or nine regular customers, according to the police report. His laptop was seized Dec. 11, 2002, and its contents included gambling-related data, police said.

Former Florida State football team equipment manager Jeffrey Inderhees was also charged with one felony count of bookmaking, but his case has not yet gone to trial.

McPherson was ordered to do community service, serve 90 days on a county work detail and be on probation for up to 30 months after pleading no contest last month to gambling and theft charges.

McPherson, who is the only Florida prep athlete chosen 'Mr. Football' and 'Mr. Basketball,' hopes to continue his athletic career at Tennessee State.@@

After being named Arena Football League Rookie of the Year on Wednesday, quarterback Adrian McPherson made it clear he has his sights set on the NFL.

"When you grew up as a child that is the main goal, to get to the NFL," McPherson told ESPNews, which announced the award as part of its contract with the AFL.

The former Southeast High star said he hopes to follow in the footsteps of Kurt Warner, who started in the Arena League before joining the NFL.

McPherson said he didn't think his problems at Florida State University would affect his chances of playing in the NFL. He was dismissed from the football team in his sophomore year amid gambling allegations. A trial on the gambling ended in a mistrial.

"I've grown a lot from it, and I've matured a lot from it and now I am moving on," McPherson told ESPNews. "Hopefully, coaches and general managers will get to know me and understand I made a mistake and give me a chance."

The 21-year-old made few mistakes in the AFL. He put up dazzling numbers that included a league record 19 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

McPherson led all rookie quarterbacks with 3,297 passing yards, 61 touchdown passes 397 passing attempts and a passer rating of 119.6. He was the fourth-ranked passer among all quarterbacks and finished third among all league runners with 259 yards rushing. He completed 237 passes.

With only five interceptions, the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder was one of only two players in the AFL with at least 60 touchdowns and five or fewer interceptions.

McPherson didn't become the Firebirds starter until the fourth game of the season and led his team to an 8-5 record. During the middle of the season he had a stretch of six games in which he threw 30 touchdown passes without an interception.

In a game that puts a premium on quick passes in part because of its narrow 85-foot- wide field, McPherson proved to be a rarity because of his running ability.

"The biggest (transition from outdoor football) was throwing everything with a touch," McPherson said. "Everything was happening so quickly."

In its June issue, ESPN The Magazine listed McPherson as one of five players, whom NFL scouts said could play in their league.

Mc Pherson got a mistrial when 5 of 6 jurors voted to convict and ONE Black female voted to acguit! If the NFL allows McPherson to play they will lose ALL credibility on the gambling issue. LT
