Went to the Finals with Seattle. You don't remember the glory days of Shawn Kemp? Bulls beat them 4-2.

Nope, he isn't a Hall of Famer.

Going back to the title. "Is Gary Payton a Hall of Famer?"

Career-wise and stat-wise, I agree with Funk Monkey that he should make it. If I had to bet, I don't think he will. He is borderline Hall of Fame and what will hurt him are the following:

1. In his prime, he was not enough of a difference maker that he could get Sonics over the hump

2. He always seemed arrogant and petulant

3. If he finally wins a championship w/Lakers, he has basically been a non-contributor and in fact, has demonstrated his petulance even more during the playoffs.

If I had to bet, I don't think he'll get in.

I agree with #2 and #3.

As for #1, don't forget the "hump" was Jordan. Several players from Payton's era are gonna make the Hall Of Fame without a title...thanks to Jordan.

sorry - but the only thing to debate is if he will be a first ballot HOFer or not.

payton IS HOF worthy - and it really isn't something to debate. and he WILl get in, too.

Payton is one of the best defenders ever. His defense abilities alone would have me vote him in.

What I have never been able to understand is the whole, "He's a hall of famer, but not first ballot..." thing.

What makes him more worthy a year later?? Either you are a hall of famer or you're not. I don't understand the whole middle ground thing.
