WASHINGTON (AP) - The National Spelling Bee took a scary turn Thursday when a 13-year-old Colorado boy appeared to faint and collapsed on stage, drawing gasps from an audience packed in for the finals. Akshay Buddiga gathered himself after a few seconds, stood up and, to the amazement of the judges, immediately started spelling his word: "alopecoid."

He got it perfectly, drawing a standing ovation. Akshay went back to his chair, looking uncomfortable, when a Bee employee came to escort him off stage. He received medical help and was expected to return.

As the crowd buzzed, the next speller approached the microphone, and the competition resumed.

Earlier, Akshay, from Colorado Springs, methodically asked for clues - definition, language of origin, part of speech, other pronunciations before he calmly got "gruine." His big brother, Pratyush, won the Scripps National Spelling Bee two years ago.

Which event abuses/harms kids more: The National Spelling Bee or the Little League World Series?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Wil-
The funny part about the kid who fainted was the female judge who said in a very stern and serious voice, "stop the clock" right after he fainted. She didn't say where are his parents or get a doctor....just "stop the clock" lol. How about the 13 yr. old boy who moaned like a female having an orgasm when he said the letter "ohohohohohohohohohhohoohohohohohohohohohohohohohohohoh", how weird was that?? Apparently the spelling bee really turns him on.

SMoniter - you have a good point, the judge was very interested in the clock. The National Spelling Bee looks like it might be headed for prime time soon. Contestants feinting, others dramatically spelling words that less than .001% of the population could spell to win it all. Great stuff.

I was in the spelling bee when I was a mere lad. I missed on "tintinnabulation".
