David Stern should be a happy man. The NBA commissioner recently joked that the best matchup in the finals would be the Lakers against the Lakers – and that's basically what we've got.
There's only one team that can beat L.A., and it's the team wearing purple and gold. With all due respect to the Detroit Pistons, the champions of the junior varsity also known as the Eastern Conference are in the role of the Washington Generals.
If the Los Angeles Lakers are serious, if they play with intensity, if they have any sense of fear that they might actually lose, then they're capable of sweeping Detroit. The Lakers dug down deep after falling behind the San Anotnio Spurs two games to none. With tenacious team defense, Shaq being Shaq and a little luck from Derek Fisher with four-tenths of a second left, the Lakers took for in a row from San Antonio. But they never feared the Minnesota Timberwolves, turning it ON and OFF against Minnesota en route to winning in six.
