Isn't this bet illegal?

Why is this legal? Isn't this explicitly gambling! Shouldn't our government be spending time cracking down on this since they are so gung-ho about gambling. To me, this is just as bad as betting on sports and it is the same thing:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) and his Michigan counterpart Jennifer Granholm are betting their digestions on the outcome of the National Basketball Association finals.

Schwarzenegger is backing the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship series against the Detroit Pistons, and both governors are hoping they won't end up eating crow after their friendly wager on the outcome.

If the Lakers capture their fourth title in five years, Schwarzenegger will send Granholm a meal featuring such California produce as wine, asparagus, strawberries and an In-N-Out burger from a fast-food chain famous in the state, which Granholm must consume while wearing a Lakers jersey.

Should Michigan's Pistons triumph, Granholm will treat Schwarzenegger to some of the state's favorite food: a warm baked meat and potato pastie, a Vernors carbonated soft drink, and chocolate covered Michigan cherries - all to be eaten by Schwarzenegger while wearing a Pistons jersey.

The Lakers have won three of the last four NBA championships, and nine NBA titles overall. The 2004 finals begin on Sunday in Los Angeles.

These bets between governors are a cliche by now. Arnold should go back to what he does best, which is sexually harassing women.

I believe it is illegal, yes.

There was recently a case where this was brought up and the bet had to be cancelled.

This very well could end ARNOLDS career, no question about it.

if only politicians had to live by the same laws that the 'commoners' do this might be true...of course, politicians pretty much do what they please.

It's just a dumb tradition between governor's in the two states that are in the finals. I recall this between the governor in Texas and the governor of New York. Neither of them no crap about the game and probably think their wagering on Baseball.
