WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE?

OFFSHORE REPORT 2004

written May 24 by THE SHRINK

As we approach the summer months, one has to wonder what lies ahead for the offshore sports betting industry.

When I look back and reflect on what has happened to many books that have floundered, it never ceases to amaze me that gamblers don't learn from their mistakes.

Ironically, the same blunder that has caused the majority of sports books to fail is EXACTLY what causes impaired judgment on behalf of the players.

The reason that virtually ALL offshore sports books go belly up is GREED. It is not that they set out intentionally to screw you, but rather, they take more risks than they should. The biggest one that has caused them to spiral downward is giving away unrealistic bonuses and perks to attract new business.

This can be said of ACES GOLD, THE DUNES, CAMELOT, and PAN AM just to name a few.

Paradoxically, gamblers who get "stiffed" often complain about signing up with "XYZ" sports book because they were promised a 30% bonus, a free golf bag, four "calling birds," three "French hens," and a trip to the Super Bowl...

Well, maybe the perks aren't always as outrgageous as the ones I just listed, but surely, you get the point! It is GREED on behalf of the gambler that often gets them in trouble and I am not only taking about choosing sports books.

It is GREED that causes some gamblers to go "double or nothing" when they don't have the funds to cover the loss. It is GREED that causes some gamblers to put their needs ahead of family and friends. Unfortunately, the last example often gets overlooked because we pay so little attention to FAMILY VALUES as a whole when we gamble. I suspect it is not "macho" to share with others about your loved ones when gambling. In my opinion, the greater man is the "Momma's boy!"

Years ago, Sting had it so right when he wrote one of the best articles I have ever read about this industry called, "SNOOZE, BOOZE, & YOU LOSE!"

The divorce rate, drug use, alcohol abuse, insurance fraud, and suicides are far more prevalent amongst gamblers compared with other vocations.

When I travel to Costa Rica, Antigua, Curacao, and other offshore gambling Mecca's, I witness many self destructive tendencies on behalf of bookmakers that would send shivers down your spine. It is not surprising that many of them are out of business now.

Since 1995, I have personally been following this industry. Nine years later, the same problems that plagued it then, continue to do so now.

AVARICE is killing many of us on an indivual basis, and as a whole. Four decades ago, Pete Seeger introduced to us a song, of which some of the lyrics come to mind now:

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone?
Girls have picked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Personally, I relate a books bonus policies to its many other factors that I consider much more important when deciding if the book is right for me.

As I have said countless times in this forum, bonuses are highly OVERstated in my opinion as to how and why books go belly-up.

a truly greedy book would NOT offer bonuses and by doing so would stay open longer and make more money.

so the problem is not greed, it is the lack of intellegence of greedy people.

this one caught my eye as i think that might be misinformation unless i misinterpretted what you mean by perks to get new business. while bonuses outside of the relavent range are sure warning signs i dont see them as causing financial problems for books.

the real problem is what they have to pay their affiliates for sending them players. imagine losing upto 40% of your gross profit every month and filling the coffers of sites like the prescription. as a former public accountant by trade that would cause me the most alarm versus a one time upfront bonus in the 20 or even 30% range.

but like everything else its a combination of things but i tell everyone im in contact with, if they want to help this industry out, never sign up thru a link at any website or tell them you were referred by anyone except maybe a friend.

this would solve many problems and get rid of the junk sites who's main goal despite its mission statement is to take advantage of players losses while at the same time encouraging them to bet and providing information that will most definitely make them a long term net loser. in my world thats known as a conflict of interest but the beauty of this industry for the entrepreneurs is there is no legal or moral basis not to do it.

anyways not looking for a fight but thats what i firmly believe

hopefully there will be a consolidation over the next few years and that will open up the opportunity for a new book to succeed, but right now isnt the time as a new book cant offer anything of value that isnt out there already and i dont like gambling with my money.

see ya

Could someone share some information as to the TOP FIVE books in the offshore world that DO NOT offer ANY bonuses that I should be playing with FIRST over such places as Pinnacle, Olympic, and Bet365.

Thanks

As its been said countless times also,,whats wrong with looking for an added incentive to offset the risk of sending your money to a book that is in another country? How would the whole offshore sportsbook industry have gotten started if it didnt offer something that would entice people to send their money and see an immediate return on their initial investment? What other marketing angle could they have taken? I doubt that using, online convenience, would have been a very good marketing tool all by itself. Obviously the most important thing to gamblers is getting paid when they win, so if a book can attract customers with Bonus Plays and/or free money and at the same time show a profit and have a solid reputation for paying out then id say that book will be around for a long time in this competitive market. Current examples of businesses that follow this model are in no particular order, Grande, Pinnacle, Hollywood, Cris, WWTS, Skybook/rio, Cascade, CBS, Oasis, Bcbets, Legendz, Millenium and family, Guardian and family, Las palmas, Jamaica and im sure countless others that ive not played at. In addition, PANAM actually had a safe bonus model in which you got the bonus in your account to play with, but you could never withdraw it. I think that is a great solution for the books who are concerned about being attacked by bonus whores and want to remain competitive but not overly exposed on the bonus side of the business especially if they are just opening up. As far as the comment, "When I look back and reflect on what has happened to many books that have floundered, it never ceases to amaze me that gamblers dont learn from their mistakes". Its unfortunate but I think those of us who got burned by wagers paradise and/or panam wont make the same mistake of investing in any completely new book that comes along on this site or any other site for that matter, even if they went so far as to send an escort to your house upon signup. Another mistake that Ive finally overcome is giving books the benefit of the doubt(loyalty) based on previous good relations with them. This was first learned by me with MVP bets/ Hustler in which they paid great for a long time then all of a sudden excuses were being made around the holidays as to why they couldnt pay. I believe everyone got paid eventually and I believe they are still in business but they proved to be not worth the risk shortly after their excuses. But it wasnt until royal started with the paying good mode,,slow pay mode,,paying good mode, slow pay mode that finally convinced me to just stay away completely from any book that plays games no matter how much they may offer upfront to satisfy my greed for money.

IMHO The best bonus that books can offer is the Free Insta-Cash Deposit!!(thru Neteller) That's a saving and an incentive to play ----without the 3 French Hens and a trip to the SuperBowl!

Pretty bold statement since you hyped PanAm as much as you did!

I THINK THE OFFSHORE BOOKS SHOULD START THERE OWN ASSOCIATION WHERE THEY ALL MONITOR EACH OTHERS ACTIVITIES,AND WHEN A BOOK IS NOT SOLID THEY WARN THE COMUNITY.THE BOOKS THAT ARE WILLING TO JOIN THIS WOULD PROBABLEY HAVE MORE CREDABILITY AMONG PLAYERS THEN A BOOK THATS NOT.

It is hard to turn down "free money" with the bonuses when you can scalp them out. I could never imagine a vegas book offering anything like their online competitors. I have gambled thousands in Vegas in sports and the only comp I got was maybe a drink ticket. There is definetly no value there anymore. I remember many times trying to bet the best number running from Ceasars to Little C's, Barbary, Bally's and back. Downtown is much easier.
As to the side effects of gambling. I think Vegas has amongst the highest suicide rate, alcohlisim, bankrupcy etc of the country. Dont miss it at all.

To blame only the "greedy gamblers" is a bit naive, when the "insiders" seem to be leading them right along...

GOOD NEWS FROM BET PANAM/ATTENTION BONUS WHORES!
