Moneymaker went out fairly early with A9 vs KJ and a board of 99KK5. Daniel Negreanu is also out. Phil Hellmuth is shortstacked. Charlie Sewell is one of the chipleaders with 85,000.

When is the last time that Helmuth won anything. This guy is living off a past, every time I see him, he looks like he is ready to cry after another elimination.

Hellmuth has 9 bracelets though doesnt he? He seems to do pretty solid on the tournament circuit, still cashing. He cashed last year in the main event.

Sorry about that - (Hellmuth) I meant he took tuff beat. Losing half his stack just before photo was snapped. Made an edit.

Hellmuth has made a bit of a comeback. As of the last update, he has 20,000.

Amusing blurb:

"Michael Laing, one of the chip leaders on $80,000, is incredibly drunk. Late back from the break, he then steps outside for a ten minute phone call before popping down to the shops."

Dante-

1) You've only seen the hands played on TV right? There are many more hands where he outplayed the competition including a few on TV where he won without having the better hand. Additionally, there were hands where folks caught up to him and he had to suckout but they had to catch-up first.

2) Have you heard about the miracles pulled by some of the other champions in their runs toward the WSOP 10k bracelet? I've heard about all sorts of suckouts by Helmuth, Ferguson, and others during their runs.

Your statement that MM had a "huge" run of luck to win is accurate but like many, your post seems to imply that his run was unique. In fact ALL WSOP champs need a run of luck to win. Poker is certainly a game of skill but ON ANY GIVEN DAY a good poker player can lose not due to "luck" per se but due to the fact that they played a hand where the odds were not in their favor AND they didn't get lucky that time.

MM, unlike Varkyoni (sp?), has proven by his subsequent success that he is a VERY good player. I think anyone winning a WSOP is a good player and certainly someone placing in the money in other WSOP events AND finishing 2nd in a WPT event is an excellent player.

Some "unknown" will win it again this year. Hold em is still 80% luck and common sense. The math is pretty simple. TV has made some creeps very popular. I was watching one of the tourneys on TV a couple of weeks ago where this French freak was jumping up and down and bragging about his A7 snapping off AA .... what a dick !
