Why did NASCAR hire Magic?

I do not watch the NASCAR but I cannot imagine that minorities want to head out to the NASCAR track on a Sunday.

"Hey honey this weekend I thought we would take the kids and head to watch auto racing along with 70,000 beer swilling, tobacco chewing rednecks with confederate flags on their pick up trucks"

Dunno. Maybe because they enjoy NASCAR? You're saying they shouldn't attend an event they enjoy simply because there are lots of white people there? I guess they should just stay home and watch it on TV.

On a related note, I can't help but notice some of the golf crowds.

Anyway, I'm just busting your balls NJ. I know what you're saying. There is still lots of "hidden" segregation in America.

For example, my high school cafeteria was relatively mixed. Different races usually sat together.

Then I got to college, and it was the total opposite!

Not my point that they shouldn't go because there are white people. I see minorities all the time at NHL games, but at NHL games the fans do not have gigantic Confederate flags waving from the RV.

College is very segregated,by choice, by students. It is almost like people get to college and say "whew that sucked ,wheres my people?"

DAYTONA BEACH -- Basketball Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson will serve as co-chairman to NASCAR's newly created Executive Steering Committee for Diversity, NASCAR announced Thursday.

Johnson will be active in a number of areas related to diversifying NASCAR's fan base, participants and work force.

"Over the last few years, NASCAR has been working with industry leaders to provide meaningful opportunities for everyone to be a part of the NASCAR community," NASCAR chief operating officer George Pyne said. "Today, we take another step in welcoming Magic Johnson to the NASCAR family.

"Magic will help NASCAR achieve its goals to better educate new audiences and facilitate greater participation among the industry and communities of color."

Best known for leading the Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA titles, Johnson has redefined himself as a successful businessman. The Magic Johnson brand has become one of the most expansive and successful business networks in the country.

Johnson will assist NASCAR with creating grassroots programs, such as Drive for Diversity, that identify and develop African American, Hispanic and women drivers and crew members and help develop marketing programs to increase the sport's visibility in urban communities.

"As a child, I spent countless hours attending race events with my father, and my strong interest in motorsports is still connected to those fond memories," Johnson said. "I plan to build on the existing initiatives and develop an urban marketing strategy. This will give real opportunities for all people to participate in the sport as fans, drivers, crew members and many other positions."

The Drive for Diversity program seeks to identify and select minority and women drivers and crew members to compete in NASCAR-sanctioned races. Already, Drive for Diversity has five drivers and six crew members competing in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

I forgot, Jesse Jackson was bitching about NASCAR a couple years ago. So I'm sure this is somehow related. Gotta keep the Rainbow/PUSH/Extortion Coalition happy, right?

I didn't know that you could force a sport to expand its fan base. "Dammit NASCAR, you need to make black people enjoy your sport, or I'm going to launch a boycott!"

Next year, all NASCAR vehicles will be equipped with spinners and what the kids refer to as "booming systems". Seriously, that's how ridiculous all of this is.

While browsing the Rainbow/PUSH website, I found Jackson's statement concerning Wal-Mart:

(Chicago, IL) Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, issued the following statement regarding Wal-Mart:

"I urge Chicago and communities across the nation to stop the Wal-Mart-ization of our economy. Some may say “these jobs are better than no jobs,” and are attracted to Wal-Mart’s promise of “jobs and low prices,” especially in these times of high unemployment and the need for community economic development. But a closer look at Wal-Mart exposes it as a Confederate economic Trojan horse."

While I'm not exactly a fan of Wal-Mart, the "Confederate" comment is a flat-out slur. I'm a bit shocked (actually, I'm not) that Jackson would resort to name-calling.

Anyway, if he thinks Wal-Mart is a Confederate Trojan horse...ummmmmmmmm...what about NASCAR?

NASCAR has long jumped the shark. If Urban America cannot relate to the NHL, how will it relate to NASCAR? Does it have some minority ownership? I don't think they have any drivers. NASCAR must be serious about leaving its roots behind and moving ahead.

This is strictly a publicity stunt by Nascar, but a very smart one. Nascar would try to get an elephant to come to the races and pick his pockets if they could find a way to do it so this isn't really a race issue. This is a good move on two fronts.

First, Magic Johnson is a hugely popular figure and a successful businessman. This gives Nascar yet another marketing tool to bring in the cash. Second, two years down the road if there aren't more black people involved in Nascar either from an employment or fan standpoint; then Nascar can sit back and say "Hey, we tried".

they hired him because black people trust him. they want the black dollar. He is different than Jessee extortion Jackson. New age blacks are more educated than ever before and they see right through Jessee Jackson. Magic hasnt sold them out yet and he probably won't. Great move by Nascar.
