I don't know why they do this. But I heard some guy on ESPN the Radio (1310AM) this morning say "All forms of internet wagering were allready illegal" But he went on to say that many college kids did not know that!!

What a country hey!

To the best of my knowledge only a couple states have internet wagering listed as a crime.

I think you are right--General. I wish I knew the guys name in the interview. He's somebody connected to stopping college kids from gambling on the internet. It was hilarious to listen to it. He said what was troubling was that 39% did not even know it was against the law. And when they were asked why they gambled on the internet, the number 1 reason given was that "
it was fun". The guy went on to say--that since it was illegal, they were playing with "bad people" and could get into even more serious trouble. I didn't hear the entire interview, but it seemed to me it was directed at NCAA athletes. (Which in their case it may be illegal--plus I'm not sure of the age frame that the guy was referring to. All in all if someone just tuned in like I did and did not know any better, you would be scared to say the least.)

I think about 10 to 15 states have rules that would treat sports betting offshore as a crime if the prosecutors were willing to take a shot at it. Thing is that prosecutions are about as rare as Red Sox or Cubs World Championships. Most of these states are ones that have legal gaming operations and enact rules such as these to both protect their legal operations and to give power to their oversight gaming commission. Usually worded something like "wagers placed with a non-licensed operation is illegal". If there is no commercial casino gaming it often isn't even addressed.

The thing to remember about this is that it is not illegal, but prohibited by the NCAA. If you are an athlete and make bets wherever, legal or illegal including Nevada, they can kick you out of sports. Still that isn't a case of legality. These morons in the sports business like reporters are a joke though. They are in bed with the sports leagues and hear probably 2 or 3 times a year a biased report talking of how dangerous sports betting is. And 99% of the time they trot out the same old cases, Northwestern and ASU to be exact. Talk about beating a dead horse.
