Just watched re-play on ESPN News, SJ got a hand ride, and won handily by 11.5 lengths despite getting steadied by Lion Heart in back stretch. How any of the also rans from the Preakness hope to make up that kind of ground at Belmont is beyond me. Natrually Rock Hard Ten and Eddington have to run (if fit). SJ looks to be a monster odds on favorite to win Triple Crown. Should be an interesting three wekks.

Don't be surprised if one of the NY trainers enters a sprinter in the Belmont to be a real rabbit and test the smrt one. It would probably be a suicide trip, but with a coupled entry to play against this SJ.
In the Big Apple--anything is possible.
One more win Smarty!!

Look for a closer at Belmont. Smarty looks like a winner though.

he looks VERY good. anyone know how his times are in comparison with previous triple crown winners?

just wondering if smarty is that good or if maybe its a weaker field than we realized this year.

Footnotes
SMARTY JONES , away alertly, was taken in hand going past the wire the first time, tracked the leader while racing well off the rail into the backstretch, continued in hand to the far turn, launched his rally leaving the three eighths pole, angled to the inside of LION HEART mid way on the turn, drew on nearly even terms with that one approaching the quarter pole, took charge at the top of the stretch, quickly opened a commanding lead in mid stretch, extended his advantage when struck twice right handed leaving the furlong marker then drew off with authority under a vigorous hand ride. ROCK HARD TEN , fractious behind the gate delaying the start for several minutes, was strung out six wide around the first turn, raced in mid pack while continuing wide down the backstretch, made a sharp move from outside to reach contention leaving the three furlong marker, angled to the inside mid way on the turn, followed the winner into the stretch but was no match for that one while clearly besting the others. EDDINGTON , unhurried for a half while racing well off the rail, gradually gained five wide nearing the far turn, moved inside IMPERIALISM at the three eighths pole, circled five wide advancing into the stretch, altered course between rivals at the three sixteenths pole but failed to threaten while improving his position. LION HEART was guided well off the rail while sprinting clear soon after the start, set a moderate pace while four wide down the backstretch, continued on the front while remaining well out from the rail around the far turn, relinquished the lead to the winner entering the lane then tired from his early efforts. IMPERIALISM returned to the paddock prior to the post parade for a repair of his left front shoe, raced five wide around the first turn, continued wide in mid pack for six furlongs then lacked a late response when called upon. SIR SHACKLETON , between rivals the first turn, chased the pace in the two to three path down the backstretch, angled to the inside while racing within striking distance to the top of the stretch then steadily tired thereafter. BORREGO broke outward then steadied on heels soon after the start, saved ground to the quarter pole, angled out at the top of the stretch, raced between rivals past the eighth pole and came up empty. LITTLE MATTH MAN was bumped and pinched back at the start, trailed for a good part of the way then failed to mount a serious rally. SONG OF THE SWORD broke inward and bobbled at the start, raced close up for a half, made a run inside the winner to threaten nearing the far turn then gave way. WATER CANNON failed to threaten.

RPM - Smarty Jones won handily (let up late) in 1:55.59 - the Preakness and Track record for the distance (mile 3/16th.) are:

The track record at Pimlico for 1 3/16 miles is 1:52 2/5 set in 1991 by Farma Way in the Pimlico Special. The Preakness stakes record is 1 53 2/5 which was set in 1985 by Tank's Prospect and tied in 1996 by Louis Quatorze.

While well off track or race record it is really hard to make comparisions due to company, and track conditions. Stewart only had to give SJ three little taps on the right flank to win by 11.5 lengths.

OLDMANTIME.......after seeing Smarty demolish the Preakness field.......you can bet that every trainer considering the Belmont will entertain that strategy.....

imo....thats the only chance to even come close to beating Smarty.....

The 11.5 length victory by Smarty Jones is the widest in Preakness history breaking old mark of 10 lengths set in Preakness one (1873). WOW.

He Was Speechless.

The more I think about the race the more impressive SJ's victory becomes. Kind of like winning a Super Bowl 56-0.

I agree, "Penn bred" Smarty Jones looks the real deal. He'll go a mile and a half. S.J. was just hitting his best stride down the lane in both the Derby and Preakness. Imo, a WEAK crop of three year olds is adding to his legend. That's not his fault.

From the FWIW department:
Seattle Slew the last undefeated Triple Crown Winner won his Preakness in 154 2/5 - second fastest ever (Secretariat 1.55 flat). Slew ran the fastest ever first mile in his Preakness at 134 4/5 - that is movin.
