Many Thanks to Pinnacle Racebook. I would like to post the Preakness Field in alphabetical order:

Borrego ran tenth in the Kentucky Derby with no real excuse. He earned a 96 Equibase Speed Figure when second to Smarty Jones in the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby on April 10, his career best effort.

Eddington was kept out of the Kentucky Derby by not having enough earnings in graded stakes, but would have been ridden by Jerry Bailey had he made the field. Eddington has no earnings barriers in the Preakness and will have the services of Bailey, who led all riders in North America last year, winning 70 stakes races (26 of which were grade 1 events). Eddington earned a 90 Equibase Speed Figure winning in February.

Imperialism was a fast-closing third in the Kentucky Derby, earning an Equibase Speed Figure of 85, a few points shy of the 88 figure he earned when winning the Grade 2 San Rafael Stakes in March, beating Derby runner-up Lion Heart by a neck. Imperialism might have been closer at the finish in the Kentucky Derby but he encountered traffic problems.

Lion Heart ran his race in the Kentucky Derby, out on the lead where he likes to be, gallantly battling Smarty Jones when that one came to him and settling for second. His Equibase Speed Figure was 87 compared to the 98 he earned in running second by a half-length in the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes prior to that, but many horses’ speed figures regressed in the Kentucky Derby. Lion Heart should again have things his own way on the lead in the Preakness.

Little Matth Man, a closer like Imperialism and The Cliff’s Edge, showed some ability when third in the Grade 2 Lane’s End Stakes in March, earning an 86 Equibase Speed Figure. Richard Migliore, one of the top jockeys in New York, is riding Little Matth Man for the first time.

Rock Hard Ten, like Eddington, was excluded from the Kentucky Derby by virtue of not having enough earnings, having been disqualified from second to third in the Santa Anita Derby. Lightly raced Rock Hard Ten earned a career best Equibase Speed Figure in the Santa Anita Derby of 89 and is on a pattern for continued improvement. Gary Stevens is scheduled to fly in from France to ride Rock Hard Ten.

Sir Shackleton is also lightly raced, having run just four times with his best effort an allowance win on April 9, earning an 87 Equibase Speed Figure. Sir Shackleton has good tactical speed and should be close to the pace.

Song of the Sword ran eleventh in the Kentucky Derby, with some traffic problems on the first turn. His best race of the year was his second-place finish in the Illinois Derby to Pollard’s Vision, earning a 93 Equibase Speed Figure. Song of the Sword won his first three career races and did not run badly in the two that followed, and he could snap back off his poor Kentucky Derby form here.

Smarty Jones is now a perfect seven for seven and is only the fifth horse in history to exit the Kentucky Derby unbeaten, the last being Seattle Slew in 1977. With an 89 Equibase Speed Figure from the Kentucky Derby, tied for the best last race figure in the field with Rock Hard Ten, and with a 97 Equibase Speed Figure earned in winning the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby, Smarty Jones should be favored to duplicate his Kentucky Derby effort.

Water Cannon is the local horse; a Maryland bred who has raced only at Laurel and Pimlico. Water Cannon won the non-graded Federico Tesio Stakes on April 17, earning an 82 Equibase Speed Figure, a career best, but well below what the main players in here are capable of earning.

Best of Luck to all, Wilheim.
