A lack of good gambling books

What qualifies someone to write a book on gambling? I would say probably not a whole lot. A recent perusal of the Barnes and Noble gambling book section proves this point.

Actually, I do think there are numerous good 21 books, simply because the game is so mathematical that it is easy to write precisely about it.

The same is true of Video Poker.

Mind boggling to me that any publisher would touch books by scamdicappers that advocate deveiations from the mathematically correct plays.

In sports, the books are just terrible. How terrible? I doubt 1 in 20 of the authors have the ability to make a living betting. The best out there is Wongs book (sharpsportsbetting) and Dan Gordons book, and my personal favorite Scott Kellen book (The Unemotional Football bettor).

Want to know how bad most gaming authors are? Go read "Beyond Counting" by James Grosjean. Grosjean is a pro who is very gifted. His book shames all the other gambling books out there. I mean blows them right out of the water. It is so good that it makes the other gaming authors look like total punters, misfits and single A ball players.

Grosjean's book is a great one, totally agree on that one. And GBC is as good as it gets, a total resource for Vegas. Unfortunately most people outside of Vegas are underserved by their bookstores and they are done terrible harm and injustice by books such as the one I described. Next time you are in a B&N store just look for it and marvel at how this guy writes about 150 pages of worthless advice. It is comically bad, except when you think that there are people that don't realize any better and will buy this book and think they can win. The most dangerous thing around isn't a dumb gambler, but a dumb gambler that THINKS he is smart. Gamblers who think they have a "system" that will win are willing to bet more money than they would in their usual pursuits. A gambler that loses with his system for a while will keep pouring money into it because he is convinced it will win in the long run. Even worse he will start off betting bigger units if he thinks he is playing with an edge. Very dangerous stuff and publishers all too happily contribute to this with no regard for if the writer actually writes valid stuff. If a writer does a book on politics, there are usually fact checkers galore to make sure he isn't fibbing; why not simple fact checkers for gambling books???

Fezz: Can you clarify a bit for me ?

For BJ ,I agree; Thorp, Patterson,Snyder, Revere,Wong, etc., all are decent, but the game has changed !

Now you've said all sports betting authors severely hold-back (Wong).Understandable !

So, Grosjean is an idiot, but Kellen,Gordon might be worth a read ? Right ?

Kellen's is probably the best I've seen - good covering not just handicapping but also money management.

Wong's is good but I think getting a little outdated - much of it seems to be "common knowledge" now, but you can still learn a lot from the methodology, especially if you are clueless when it comes to statistics.

Never saw what was so great about Gordon's book

Grosjean I have been looking for for over a year now with no luck. Really want to pick that one up. Also interested in Peszynski's "win more lose less" which I have heard good things about.

What everyone has to remember is that no one is going to release profitable information. You would have to be stupid to give away any really profitable "secrets".

Can anyone (fezzik/Fishhead?) suggest some decent video poker books?

Then after that you I suggest you subscibe to the VIDEO POKER TIMES newsletter that is published bi-monthly by Dan.

Couple these two products with the WIN software or something similar for practicing at home...............and you will need NOTHING else. (besides me as a paid consultant).
