Avoid Compaq and HP like the plague.
Check out "Compaqsucks.com" and goggle similar concepts to find out that I am one of many who would not go near a Compaq product.

My Compaq was one of the biggest nightmares of my adult life.
Customer service uniformly hideous.
They have an entire division set up to deal with people when they get to the point of telling customer service, as I did, "You are not capable of repairing this machine."
Compaq purchased HP so expect the same.

I purchased a Fujitsu - everything the opposite of Compaq - very good to excellent customer service, excellent computer, no problems in almost 2 years.
It uses some Toshiba and Hitachi parts.

On the downside, Fujitsu can only be purchased thru Fry's, one other electronics chain (wasn't familiar with them), and online.

My best advice, go threw a local computer guy, have them build you a PC to fit what you need.Do a little homework as per hardware, video card, monitor etc this way you tell them exactly what you want in there. Get a concrete warantee (tech parts etc)If somthing goes wrong, you call them and THEY fix it, no more BS over the phone. If you really want the headaches to end this is the way.

RayServers hands-down.

Secure installed, future-proof systems. Not for the bargain hunter, but worth every dime.

I would say either an IBM or a alienware, both quite pricey

I am looking forward to my next desktop which will be "home made" using AMD 64 cpus

Other people swear by Dell.

Are AMD processers good? Or is Intel better or no difference?

Building a computer is a great idea. You can buy the best of every component. If you can't put it together yourself, there are plently of places like PC Club or indiviudals that can put it together for you. There are alot of websites that give advice like this one.

You really should build your own computer. It is so much easier then you think. You could even salvage some of your old parts like a hard drive or RAM and save even more money. Every company, I repeat EVERY company charges way to much.

What's the complaint about Hewlett Packard? Mine is over 4 years old and has worked very well for somebody who knows nothing. Still I have an open mind.
