I personally have not tried them, but have a lot of friends that are on Effexor, Prozac, Welbutrin, etc. Are they bad for you? Anyone know the long term effects? The wife thinks that they would lessen my mental ups and downs during difficult times in my life. I am happy with a few glasses of wine to cut the edge. I just hate the idea of having to take a pill EVERY SINGLE DAY. Any thoughts would be great.

Taking a pill every day can't be a good thing IMO (except harmless stuff like vitamins etc.)

My theory is that people gamble precisely because they want more ups and downs in life. Those which come in everyday life are just not enough. I see nothing wrong in using moderate amounts of alcohol to manage the mood, as long as it doesn't become an everyday habit. If you find you need some help every day then a lifestyle change is in order which, of course, is easier said than done.

Just one man's opinion

Some people really need an anti depressant or nerve pill to keep their life in order. As with anything, you got to weigh the pros and cons.

Happy with a pill today and sad with liver or kidney problems at 60. Not happy without a pill today and maybe happy at 90.

It's a tough choice, but one each person has to take responsibility for.

Anyone considering going on them should do alot of research, I have known two people who have become suicidal after using them....
I have seen the transformation of a friend who went from very normal to a paranoid suicidal depressed lunatic shortly after taking Zoloft...too many people willing to take a pill in hopes their troubles will subside..and of course doctors (who must get kickbacks) are more than happy to prescribe these silent life altering so called helpful anti-depressants...whatever anyone does please do the research before popping these drugs...very serious consequences are possible....its also hard to ween off these drugs once you get on them

The Shrink should give an opinion on this, afterall he is a Shhhr....isn`t he?

All kidding aside, take JMANS advice seriously!!

These mind-altering drugs do far worse than they do good in my humble opinion.

A MUCH better alternative is to get some exercise, socialize with ANYBODY, find a hobby, and basically improve yourself in any positive way and perferably without ANY drugs.

BE GOOD TO YOURSELF!!

why dont you just boot heroin and join kurt cobain and layne staly
doctors that prescribe this shit should be made to do this stuff for a month before sending it out to the public to become addicted

Like many things in life "it depends".

If you really are manic, can't sleep, are irritable, racing thoughts, then the last thing you want is an anti-depressant.

Others have responded in the vein that there is probably too much faith in drugs these days, placed by those who seek happiness out of a bottle. The drug companies, in my opinion, have a lot to answer for in their advertizing of these products.

If you have severe ups and downs then you should seek medical attention. I have been hospitalised three times for mania, with intervening periods of several years. My depression has been less significant. There are basically two drugs used for manic depression, lithium and valproate. I take valproate daily. The only thing I've noticed is that I had started to have panic attacks, which are associated with depression, and since taking the pills I no longer have them.

One thing to be aware of is that in a manic state it is not uncommon to make rash exorbitant expenditures. If you are doing this then you need to get immediate help.

I am familiar with the alcohol self medication. Winston Churchill is a famous example of someone who functioned quite well with the disorder and this self medication.

Finally its not gambling that makes you manic but it could be an outlet you use during your heightened state.

Judge says, "fifty years" and bangs the gavel. Defendant cried out, "Fifty years! I can't do no fifty years!" Judge, "Well, just do as many as you can."

Life can be manic, work can be manic, on and on. People can be stupid, some obviously drugless.

Too many doctors are looking for the quick fix. Drugs might ease some of the symptoms...but drugs never deal with the causes.

Even Stevie Nicks isn't a fan of psychiatric medications...and it isn't like Nicks is a stranger to drugs.

To help her kick cocaine, Nicks was prescribed Klonopin. "It robbed me of my 40s," she claims. "It’s the kind of drug which steals your brain and your heart and sadly I have to say that I fared better on coke, brandy, pot and Kool cigarettes. I wrote some pretty good songs then as well."

when I went through my divorce the doc threw me on effexor xr. Holy shit!!! I used to sit there and and shake and tremble like a fool. It makes you totally indifferent. If my house burned down I would not of cared. The only thing I ate was peanut butter and to top it all off I was telling the truth on the scorephone. I think I said I was 1-4 one day. That was the last straw I guess because Jack Price heard me say that on the score phone and personally flew to Atlanta and threw my effexor away.
