This came to mind after reading the thread regarding sending in winning tickets and having the casinos send you the money via mail.
Ok, on to what I want to make sure everyone is aware of regarding lost or stolen sports tickets in Vegas and what actions you can take should this happen to one of you. First and formost, the casino is NOT LIABLE for your lost or stolen ticket and anything they may do to help you recover your ticket is out of pure cortesy. Please understand this and do not get upset with the sportsbook employees.
The first thing one needs to do is contact an employee in the sportsbook where the wager was made....preferably a superviser or even the manager themselves. Explain the situation to them, keeping in mind that they are not held responsible for this, so the kinder and calmer you present your case the better. If they are willing to help you they will ask specific questions about your bet such as the time you made the bet, the amount, what team or teams you bet, what ticket window and the writer that printed your ticket. If it is concluded pretty reasonably that they have found your ticket in the system, you will then be asked to fill out a lost/stolen ticket form detailing all the information about that ticket. Most sportsbooks then will place a 60-90 day hold on your ticket and at the end of that time you may collect your winnings. In the meantime, if anybody should try and cash this ticket, they will be denied.
Have had some very unique and actually pretty funny happenings where I have had to use this personally. The first time was probably around 1985 or so when I was sitting in the Stardust with my fellow fleas(lol) and somebody stole my wallet. Well, fortunately I had 3-4 betting tickets in my wallet and one in particular was worth about $1,400 so chances are the theif would try and cash it. Went through the process of putting a hold on my ticket as described above and sure as *hit the thief tryed to cash it in 2 weeks later and he was busted! I didnt even press charges as I was just glad to get my money and my wallet back.
The next time I was called on to use this was when I really *ucked up and showed my stupidity. During the day I had made a couple wagers attempting to catch a middle. Two different tickets each to win $500. Well, Don wannabe Juan here picks up this stewardess around 4pm in the afternoon and I spend time with her till around 3am when I then leave her hotel room. Well, during the course of the evening, I had checked my bet to see if I had won my middle. After checking the sports board and finding that I had indeed lost my middle, my date and I headed for the elevator to go to her room and just before stepping into the elevator I ripped up BOTH tickets and threw them in the sand of those cigarette cans. Never even crossed my mind that one of them was a winning ticket for$550 to win $500.....$1,050! To make this story short, this didnt hit me till I was back home and laying in bed half crocked at 5am in the morning! I raced back to the casino(Hacienda) hoping to find my ticket(yeah right). Now here is the ironic part of this story, I had made the winning bet at my place of employment, the Castaways! At that time in the morning all the tickets were at the casino cage. I knew exactly where they were kept as it was my job on many nights to grade all winning tickets(in those days by hand) and deliver them to a spindle at the cage. LoL! Luckily, knew everyone that was working that night in the cage, and I actually found my ticket on the spindle and put a hold on MY OWN TICKET! LMFAO thinking back on it. I am rambling way to much here for my own good, so I will save the last story for a later time. This last story is one of the most unbelievable things you will ever here. Remind me to tell it sometime, when your all not bored to tears like now.
